One week ago, Kansas defeated defending ACC champion Georgia Tech, 28-25, in one of week two’s more shocking results.

The team that was seen battling Iowa in the 2010 Orange Bowl lost to Turner Gill’s Jayhawks, the same team that lost by a 6-3 score to FCS-based North Dakota State on Sept. 4. As Kansas traveled down to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for a date with Southern Miss last Friday, college football diehards were wondering which Kansas team would show up and reveal itself.

The team that lost to North Dakota State clearly emerged on Sept. 17, forcing the Jayhawks to go back to the drawing board once again.

Kansas is simply not a good football team – there’s just no other way to say it. It’s not so much Gill’s coaching as it is a lack of raw and natural athleticism on the Jayhawks. Kansas was a step slower than Southern Miss from start to finish.

KU players were stuck in molasses while Southern Miss blocked a punt just before halftime and returned it for a touchdown to amass a 21-3 lead at the break. Kansas pulled within 11 points, at 21-10, but never crept within single digits at any point during the second half. This game was that decisive and damning for the Jayhawks, who are in for a long year in the Big 12 North.

College Football Game Lines: What New Mexico State Has To Do To Win

When one realizes how weak Kansas is across the board, the Aggies and coach DeWayne Walker have to win this game by making the Jayhawks stumble. Kansas is 91st in the nation in both rushing and passing offense, and the Jayhawks rank 110th out of the country’s 120 FBS programs in points scored.

New Mexico State needs to shorten this game and make it ugly. The boys from Las Cruces, New Mexico, need to minimize their own offensive weaknesses and get as many hidden yards as possible from special-teams plays, turnovers, and home-run shots down the field.

The passing game for the Aggies is at least somewhat credible – they’re 65th in the nation in the passing game, but 102nd in rushing – so any vertical pass production will be very important on Saturday evening in the American Heartland.

College Football Game Lines: What Kansas Has To Do To Win

If KU is a poor team, New Mexico State is absolutely wretched. The Aggies are 113th in scoring offense, 114th in scoring defense, and – as noted above – a terrible running team. This is a matchup in which Kansas should be able to impose its will.

The Jayhawks can’t give anything to the Aggies for free. As long as KU doesn’t cough up big plays or gift-wrap defensive touchdowns to New Mexico State, it should fare well. The Jayhawks better savor a favorable matchup while they can.

College Football Game Lines: Outlook & Pick

Kansas will struggle mightily in October and November, but in this final non-conference game of 2010, the Jayhawks should cruise. New Mexico State is one of the eight worst teams in the entire FBS. Kansas will look good by comparison.
