Alabama: -160
Ohio State: +120
Why not start out the college football futures bets with a bang, by looking at the top two teams in the preseason poll.
Alabama’s road to a second straight BCS National Championship will not be easy. They’ve got an always brutal SEC schedule, with road games at Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU and South Carolina. Conference heavyweights Auburn and Florida come to Bryant-Denny Stadium.
For Ohio State the schedule becomes just as tough, with trips to Iowa and Wisconsin late in the season which will determine their ultimate fate.
However, the play here is to take Alabama -160. The Tide are favorites to take down the SEC Championship, and everyone knows that should that happen, they’ll likely get a shot at another National title.
Ohio State has skill across the board, but even if they survive those late season games in Big 10 play, they’d still likely still have to get through Alabama in the BCS title game. Which ain’t gonna happen.
Your first college football futures bet should be, no, it needs to be, Alabama to finish higher than Ohio State.
The Pick: Alabama (-160)
Who’ll Finish Higher in the Final USA Today Poll:
Texas: -140
TCU: EV
This college football futures bet features two teams that finished last regular season undefeated, but lost hotly contested bowl games. Who’ve you got, the mighty Texas Longhorns, or upstart TCU Horned Frogs?
Obviously Texas’ road through the regular season is tougher, as they’ve got Oklahoma on a neutral field, and also have to travel to Nebraska and Texas Tech, a place they always have trouble playing. Should they win those games, they’d still likely have to play Nebraska again in a Big XII title game.
And keep in mind that on top of all that, they’ll have to do it all with a quarterback in Garrett Gilbert who has never started a college game.
While many fans aren’t as familiar with TCU, they’ll need to get to know them. TCU finished last year ranked in the top five in every major defensive category, and returns a lot on offense including Andy Dalton at quarterback and Jeremy Kerley as his top target at wide receiver.
TCU’s toughest games seem to be Oregon State in Dallas on opening night, with showdowns later in the year against BYU at home and Utah on the road.
With all that returning talent, it seems like TCU is the play to make here.
We’re not saying that Texas can’t- or won’t- be good. They return too much talent to lose more than a few games. But at the same time, asking them to finish above a team that returns as much talent as TCU, and ended last year ranked No. 6 in both polls is a tall order to ask.
Take the Horned Frogs over their Lone Star State counterparts, and get your wager in today, in the college football betting!
The Pick: TCU (EV)
