College Football Futures – Most Passing Yards and Most Rushing Touchdowns

August 27, 2010

Hey fans, who’s ready to make some preseason college football picks? Well the wait is over, as before the games kick off next week, you can get some head-to-head futures bets in now.

Let’s take a look at a few of the best full season, college football picks:

More Passing Yards- Christian Ponder -100 ½ yards (-115) or Jacory Harris +100 ½ yards (-115): Looking at the first college football picks, it’s time to analyze a  pair of ACC rival quarterbacks, Christian Ponder at Florida State and Jacory Harris at Miami.

Ponder is back to lead college football’s 25th best passing attack from a year ago, one that averaged over 271 yards per game. And as good as those numbers are, they are a bit deceiving, with Ponder throwing for 2,717 yards in just nine games before falling to injury, and not playing in the Seminoles last four contests. In his absence Florida State didn’t top the 271 yard per game mark once, while they did it six times in his nine starts.

This year Ponder is back, and brings with him several top receivers, and all five starters on the offensive line. Which is kind of a big deal in the world of college football.

As for Harris, he is a skilled quarterback, but one that forces too many passes into too small places. He tossed 24 touchdowns, but also 17 interceptions last year, although to his credit, did top the 300 yard mark four times. To his benefit, his top three receivers- Leonard Hankerson, LaRon Byrd and Travis Benjamin- are all back at Miami in 2010.

Truthfully, of all the college football picks, this one is one of the toughest to call. With both quarterbacks improved and leading pass happy attacks, it wouldn’t be surprising to see both within 100 yards of each other, one way or the other.

Therefore, take Harris +100 ½. Yes those interceptions need to be improved, but he will throw for a lot of yards this year. So will Ponder. The two will be neck-and-neck all season long.

More Rushing Touchdowns- LaMichael James – ½ a TD (-115) or Noel Devine + ½ a TD (-115): When you look up “small, explosive running backs,” in the dictionary, the pictures of Oregon’s James and West Virginia’s Devine are what you should find (Why you’re looking up “small, explosive running backs,” in the first place is beyond me).

Both come into 2010 off monster campaigns, with Devine tallying 1,465 yards and 13 touchdowns, and James rushing for 1,546 yards and 14 scores. On the down side, both also come into 2009 with quarterback concerns, as potential All-American Jeremiah Masoli was kicked off of Oregon’s team, and West Virginia will be breaking a rarely used sophomore Geno Smith.

Looking at this one objectively, the play here seems to be James. For one, he is just entering his sophomore year, while Devine, may have already peaked, now going into his fourth year in Morgantown.

And with both schedules looking seemingly the same on paper, what your college football picks ultimately comes down to is this: Who’ll get the ball more along the goal-line?

With an inexperienced quarterback expect James to get the brunt of the carries down there. Devine on the other hand will likely share them with big back Ryan Clarke, who scored eight touchdowns on just 60 carries in 2009. Coach Bill Stewart is concerned about the wear and tear on his little guy, so it seems natural that he will lessen the hits Devine takes in the red zone.

Regardless, the season is here, and with it, now is the time to make your college football picks.

Take Jacory Harris +100 ½ OVER Christian Ponder and LaMichael James – ½ over Noel Devine.
