College Football Betting Tips – Sun Belt Power Poll

September 12, 2009

In general, the Sun Belt squads didn’t get off to a flying start to the 2009 season. BetOnline Sportsbook keeps you in touch with how the teams in the smallest conference in America stack up for sports bettors with this week’s power poll…

1: North Texas Mean Green (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Ball State was the Cinderella of the NCAA football betting season a year ago, but the Mean Green wouldn’t have anything of it in the first game of their ’09 campaign. After rolling up 512 yards of offense, North Texas has to think it may be able to compete with some of the other stronger teams in the Sun Belt. The rushing trio of RB Cam Montgomery, RB Lance Dunbar, and QB Riley Dodge toted the rock a whopping 46 times for 281 yards in the 20-10 victory.

Up Next: Away @ Ohio

2: Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (1-0 ATS, 0-1 SU) It took hitting the backdoor, but the Warhawks found a way to cover the hefty 41.5-point spread against the Longhorns. Still, it’s not overly impressive that ULM gave up 568 yards of offense. Defensive efforts like that will be punished later down the line when the spreads aren’t nearly as large. Another bad defensive game will result in embarrassment next week against an FCS opponent.

Up Next: Home vs. Texas Southern

3: Arkansas State Red Wolves (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Red Wolves did absolutely nothing wrong in their 61-0 dismantling of Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils only mustered five first downs for the entire game. Don’t get fooled right off the bat, though. Arky State rolled up 83 points in a game against an FCS opponent last season, and then proceeded to be a miserable offensive team for the rest of the season.

Up Next: Away @ Nebraska

4: Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) A lot of pundits thought that the Cajuns may have been in a lot of trouble against Southern, but they came out with authority and scored the 42-19 victory. Defensively, the first quarter was incredibly depressing, as ULL allowed two touchdowns. For the game, the unit allowed 380 yards of offense. Much like other Sun Belt teams, defense has been a big issue, and if the defense rears its ugly head next week, the romp may be on.

Up Next: Home vs. Kansas State

5: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Blue Raiders gave a valiant effort in Death Valley, especially considering that they were down 7-0 after the opening kickoff, but ultimately, they narrowly missed covering the 18.5-point spread in a 37-14 defeat. QB Dwight Dasher had a shaky ’09 MTSU debut, going 20/42 for 204 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions, but proved his versatility by rushing for 61 yards on 19 carries.

Up Next: Home vs. Memphis

6: Florida International Golden Panthers (0-0 ATS, 0-0 SU) FIU was the only Sun Belt team not in action in Week 1 of the college football betting season. The Golden Panthers will kick off their ’09 campaign in Tuscaloosa next week.

Up Next: Away @ Alabama

And the rest…

7: Troy Trojans (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)

8: Florida Atlantic Owls (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)
