West Virginia enters this game off their most complete, and dominating win of the season. Last Saturday they owned the UNLV Rebels, controlling the first half with 35 points, before cruising to a 49-10 final. But for all the talk about this offense (and we’ll get to them), it’s West Virginia’s defense which has been the story so far this season. Right now, they’re absolutely phenomenal.
On the year, West Virginia ranks in the Top 10 in college football in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense, and in the top 20 in passing defense as well. It’s virtually impossible to move the ball on them. In their five games, West Virginia has only given up 21 points once, and the 13.6 points a game they’re allowing is the seventh best scoring defense in the country.
Offensively, the Mountaineers are athletic and dynamic, and will be an excellent college football betting pick this Thursday night. Quarterback Geno Smith is just a sophomore, but playing well over his head right now, completing 66 percent of his passes and has tossed 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions on the young season.
On the opposite side of things, running back Noel Devine is looking for his third straight 1,000 yard season, with 475 rushing yards at the midway point.
As for South Florida, it’s a rebuilding year under rookie head coach Skip Holtz, and the problems begin and end with the offense, especially the passing game. While the Bulls are actually scoring a decent amount of points (27 a game), that’s due in large part to a strong running game.
Quarterback B.J. Daniels is struggling under center, and is completing an abysmal 52 percent of his passes right now. He’s thrown just four touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season.
With that, is there any way these South Florida Bulls can cover the college football betting line this weekend? Don’t wager on it. Take West Virginia.
Really, the Mountaineers defense is playing at such a high-level right now, that it won’t take an offensive explosion for them to cover this point spread. Instead, West Virginia just needs to go out, do what they do on defense, and allow Smith and Devine to make plays.
The offense seems to be getting better every game, and other than a bad showing at LSU (one of the top defenses in college football), they’ve actually been pretty good. The Mountaineers have scored 30 or more points in three of their five games this season.
While this used to be one of the Big East’s best rivalries, right now it’s completely one-sided with South Florida’s struggles. Things will get better in time for the Bulls, but not this year, and certainly not in this game.
Take West Virginia with your Thursday college football betting pick.
