College Football Betting – South Carolina Takes On Kentucky

October 16, 2010

This College Football Betting preview features the Kentucky Wildcats hosting the 10th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks who are fresh off beating the number one team in the country. Beating a number one team for the first time in school history hasn’t gotten the Gamecocks that much respect in the sportsbook as they are only 4 ½ point favourites to beat the Wildcats in their building.

But considering the low number and their performance last week, the Gamecocks are getting the majority of the College Football Betting action as 78% of people are taking them to cover.

Another reason I just can’t get my head wrapped around this line is that it’s not like the Gamecocks just squeaked by Alabama, they beat them by 14-points. When you beat the number one team in the country 35-21, I would expect that the line the next week would be a little more lopsided considering they’re playing a team that is only 3-3 on the season.  The win for SC moved them to 4-1 on the year, but by knocking off the big boy in the division, they’ve set themselves up with a chance to win the SEC title.

College Football Betting Spread:
South Carolina – PS -4 ½ (-110) ML -200
Kentucky – PS +4 ½ (-110) ML +165
Total – 54 ½

This Kentucky team is in the dumps of sorts as after opening the season 3-0 in non-conference action, the Wildcats have dropped three straight, each of those to SEC opponents. The last loss came in heartbreaking fashion as they were tied with Auburn heading into the final moments, but lost on a last second field goal to give the Tigers the 37-34 victory. With so many loses in the conference, all that Kentucky can hope to do now is play spoiler, but with the Gamecocks now focused on the SEC title, that’s going to be a tough task.

It will be almost impossible if the Gamecocks get another game like they did out of quarterback Stephen Garcia last week. The fact they beat Alabama tells you the he clearly had himself a ball game, which is almost an understatement as he completed an incredible 17-of-20 passes for 201 yards and three big touchdowns.  His favourite target on the day was their big play receiver, Alshon Jeffery, who hauled in two of those touchdown passes. Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore continued his outstanding season as he was able to rush for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 23 touches, helping balance an offensive attack that looked dynamite all day.

With Kentucky not having the services of their top tailback, Derrick Locke, they’re going to have a tough time keeping up with the Gamecocks offence. Their defence gave up 521 yards of offence against Auburn, and considering what South Carolina was able to do to Alabama, they will likely get exposed.

College Football Betting Prediction:  South Carolina (-4 ½)
