And old Big 8 rivalry with a new Big XII twist will take place Saturday evening when the Nebraska Cornhuskers host the Oklahoma Sooners. And as it was during this rivalry’s heyday, both teams are winning games with their defense.
For Oklahoma, their defense is absolutely loaded with future NFL superstars. Go up and down their roster and you’ll see Gerald McCoy, Austin Box, Ryan Reynolds, Travis Lewis, Dominique Franks and others, all of which will be playing on Sunday’s very soon. On the season, they rank eighth in college football giving up just 12 points per game, while also ranking third in rushing defense, allowing just 80 yards per game. It is however important to note that the Sooners had their worst game defensively last Saturday, when they gave up 30 points and close to 400 yards of offense to Kansas State.
As for Nebraska, they don’t have the across the board talent that the Sooners do, but will have the best player on the field Saturday night, in senior defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Earlier this year, Suh was being talked about as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, and while that talk has died down, he’s someone that always needs to be accounted for whenever he’s on the field. The Cornhuskers currently are ranked fourth in college football in scoring defense, allowing just 11 points per game, and a week ago did not give up an offensive touchdown to Baylor.
Offensively, neither of these teams is nearly is productive. In the case of Oklahoma it has simply been a numbers game, as many of their top players including quarterback Sam Bradford and tight end Jermaine Gresham have missed all or parts of this season with injuries. Landry Jones has filled in for the injured Bradford, and while he has been good, it’s impossible to expect him to replace the production of the former Heisman winner.
While injuries can be blamed for Oklahoma’s struggles, the same cannot be said for the Cornhuskers, as they have simply been inefficient. Cody Green got his first career start at quarterback last Saturday, and it appears as if he may be the answer Nebraska is looking for. Expect him to start again against the Sooners.
While neither team is going to pile on the points Saturday, Oklahoma certainly has to be considered a heavy favorite. They simply have more weapons on the offensive side of the ball, and better overall talent defensively. Remember, Nebraska has had just two offensive touchdowns the last two weeks, and has turned the ball over 10 times.
Although this game is in Nebraska, take Oklahoma. Bo Pelini is slowly turning things around at Lincoln, but he isn’t moving fast enough to catch Bob Stoops this year.
Aaron’s Pick: Oklahoma -6
