College Football Betting Lines Alabama vs Mississippi

October 10, 2009

The Mississippi Rebels were ranked as high as fourth this year, before dropping all the way down to twentieth in the polls. A crucial game against the Crimson Tide now stands between them and obscurity, and this one is much tougher to predict than the rankings of these two teams would indicate.

Almost all the oddsmakers pulled this game down by a point to ensure equal betting on both sides. It’s not just a trap to convince you to take Alabama. The oddsmakers are legitimate nervous that Jevon Snead and Houston Nutt can play the role of upset specialist against ‘Bama.

The Rebels have gone 5-1 ATS in their last 6 against Alabama Crimson Tide, and are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games. The average point differential between these two over the past four years has been -3.25 in favor of Alabama. That’s not exactly encouraging for the Tide bettors, even though their team is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.

Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0) vs. Mississippi Rebels (3-1)

Saturday, October 10 th — Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium, Oxford — 3:30pm EST

NCAAF Betting Line: Alabama -5 (45.5)

The Tide rank in the top-15 in most offensive categories, except in passing where their 239.4 yards through the air average is ranked 52 nd in the nation. That won’t be a huge concern for the Rebels since they only allow 159.8 yards per game, so it will be a long day to see if the rushing defense (114.3 yards against on the ground) can step up to stop a Tide rushing assault that averaged 228.2 yards on the ground.

In Mississippi, the Rebels are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games when playing Alabama. On top of that, the Rebels have had a bye week to rest and game plan for a huge upset, while the Tide have been trucking week in and week out. Now they hit the road.

The odds area against the Tide in this one, which is why I’m siding with the home dogs on the NCAAF betting line. It’s not so much that I think Houston Nutt is better than Saban’s boys, but history has been a valid indicator of what happens in these games. When in doubt, stay the course and follow the trends.

Furious Free Pick: Mississippi +5 (OVER)
