College Football Betting Line – Vanderbilt vs Ole Miss
September 17, 2010
While no one expected Ole Miss or Vanderbilt to compete for an SEC title, both enter Saturday’s matchup desperate for a win in the college football betting line. Who’ll get it? Let’s take a look.
Vanderbilt Commodores (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) at Ole Miss Rebels (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS)
Saturday, September 18: 12:21 p.m. SEC Network
NCAA Betting Odds:
Vanderbilt: +12
Ole Miss: -12
Total Points: 43 ½
This will be the conference opener for Ole Miss, and playing in the rugged SEC West, they’ve got little margin for error. With the Rebels trying to get to six wins and a bowl game there is even less margin for error for this squad. Especially after a devastating loss to open the season.

That defeat was at home, at the hands of I-AA Jacksonville State two weekends ago. Simply put, it was maybe the worst loss in school history.
The Rebels dominated early but took their foot off the gas late, blowing a three touchdown halftime lead, before falling 49-48 in overtime. While the Ole Miss rebounded last weekend at Tulane, they’re still a huge work in progress.
Leading them, is one of the most controversial men in college football, quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli was an All-Pac 10 performer at Oregon last year, who got into some trouble with the law and was booted from the Ducks roster. He ended up in Oxford amongst heavy turmoil over the summer, but has played well since stepping on the field. Last Saturday in the Rebels win over Tulane, Masoli completed 14 of 20 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown. To his credit Masoli is getting better every week in Mississippi while still trying to figure out his new teammates.
As for their opponents in this weekend’s college football betting line, the Vanderbilt Commodores are 0-2, but have played those two opponents awfully tough. In their opener the Commodores fell by two points to Northwestern, and followed that up with a tough loss to LSU last weekend. They trailed just 10-3 heading into the fourth quarter, before falling apart down the stretch and losing 27-3.
The key for Vanderbilt to stay in this game will come in the hands of a passing game that simply needs to be better than it has been. Through two games, Vanderbilt is averaging just 155 yards through the air, which ranks them 101st in college football. Quarterback Larry Smith is still trying to figure things out in his junior year, and is still only completing 56 percent of his passes.
The SEC is always known for strong defenses, but in the case of these two teams, they’re just struggling offenses. Because of it, expect a low scoring game, and for Vanderbilt to cover the +12. Make them your college football betting line pick.
Mississippi will have the home-field advantage, and should be able to ride it out into a win, but at the same time this team shouldn’t be giving 12 points against anyone, let alone a conference opponent. Expect Ole Miss’ strong secondary led by All-American candidate Johnny Brown to shut down the Vanderbilt passing attack, but for the Rebels offense to be slow itself.
If you’re looking for a game full of solid defense and devoid of offensive fireworks , this one is for you. When it comes to this college football betting line, take Vanderbilt to cover and for the point total to go UNDER. Get your bet in now!
The Pick: Vanderbilt +12 and Total Points UNDER 43 ½
