New coach Skip Holtz has South Florida playing hard, even if the previous coach didn’t leave him all that much talent.

In their two games this year, the Bulls have been led by quarterback B.J. Daniels, a supreme athlete, who is still just figuring out how to be a quarterback. Either way, he was quick on his feet in his last start, which just happened to come in the Swamp, against the Florida Gators.

Daniels had one of the best rushing performances of his career, as he ran for 107 yards, but unfortunately that couldn’t make up for his lackluster effort through the air. Daniels threw for just 84 yards, completing an embarrassing 25 percent of his passes, and threw three interceptions. As was said before, he’s still learning how to be a quarterback.

Luckily, against this Western Kentucky defense, he’ll have a nice learning curve as South Florida tries to cover the college football betting line. The Hilltoppers are giving up a staggering 50 points per game, ranking them 119th out of 120 teams in college football, putting them ahead of only the New Mexico Lobos. If there was ever a game for Daniels to go wild, it’d be in this one.

Things don’t look much more promising on the offensive end for Western Kentucky, where they’re one of the worst passing teams in college football. Sophomore quarterback Kawaun Jakes is learning on the fly for this team, and it shows, as he’s completing under 60 percent of his passes, and has thrown two touchdowns and two interceptions.

He’ll need the game of his life just to keep this one close at Raymond James Stadium.

But for some funny reason, this writer happens to think that Jakes will do just that this weekend. Take the Hilltoppers to cover their first college football betting line of the season.

Now no one is saying the Hilltoppers will win, because any way you cut it, they won’t. But at the same time for Daniels and this South Florida team to be giving close to four touchdowns against any team is ridiculous.

The Bulls will get better over time this year, but still have a lot of work to do before they’re beating anyone by 28 points.

In the end, take South Florida to win, but Western Kentucky to cover. As strange as it sounds, they’re the pick to make in this weekend’s college football betting line.

The Pick: Western Kentucky +27
