College Football Betting – Ten Things to Watch For This Weekend

October 8, 2010

Ten things we’re looking for in this week of college football betting:

  • I’m interested in seeing what happens with the Florida State pass rush as they go up against Miami. The Seminoles lead the nation in sacks, and we know that Miami’s Jacory Harris, who has been intercepted eight times, has a tendency to hold the ball while he waits for downfield patterns to develop. FSU hopes to hurry him into mistakes, or drop him. In this intense in-state rivalry, the Hurricanes are a six-point favorite in college football betting for Saturday.
  • I’m wondering whether Air Force will have something of a "hangover" after ending a seven-game losing streak to Navy last week. That one meant a lot to this program, which now has the inside track on winning the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. They’re laying a boatload of points – 24.5 to be exact – against Colorado State this Saturday.
  • UCLA visits Cal this week, and I wonder whether the Bears have learned any lessons about dealing with the Pistol offense. if you recall, just a few weeks ago, they were torched for 316 rushing yards and 52 points by a Nevada team that originated the formation, and Kevin price should be back at QB for UCLA after sitting out vs. Washington State. The Bruins are a 7.5-point college football betting underdog in the game at Berkeley.
  • Can you imagine losing the way Tennessee did last week, being called for too many men on the field after stopping LSU? That’s the kind of thing that can carry over, especially with a young team and a first-year head coach. So they might be a little vulnerable, even though they are getting eleven points in college football betting against a 1-4 team in Georgia. We’re also anxious to see what happens with Georgia’s AJ Green in his second week back, after seven catches for 119 yards and two TD’s against Colorado.
  • I’m watching that matchup for the "Victory Bell" which will take place in Cincinnati this year between the Bearcats and Miami of Ohio, if for no other reason than that this is the oldest non-conference rivalry in college football, having started all the way back in 1888. Miami leads the series 59-48-7, but of course, Cincinnati has won it the last four years, and they are laying 17 points in the college football betting odds
  • Temple may have an embarrassment of riches on its hands. The Owls, who were without Bernard Pierce (who gained 1361 yards as a freshman) last week, turned to Matt Brown, who had 226 yards against Army in the 42-35 win. As the Owls grab 6three points on the road at Northern Illinois this week, are we looking at a two-headed backfield to rank right up there with what Pittsburgh has?
  • Oh, and just what DOES Pittsburgh have? Well, that’s a very interesting question, and significant in that the Panthers will be playing at Notre Dame on NBC this Saturday. Dion Lewis had 1799 yards last year in his freshman season, but it looks like the guy who may be taking over is Ray Graham, an explosive type and like Lewis, a sophomore who had 277 yards against Florida International last week. Graham vaulted into third place in the NCAA rushing standings with that performance. Will these guys pose double trouble for Notre Dame on Saturday? Pitt is a six-point underdog in the college football betting lines in this game.
  • Can they be all that they can be? Rich Ellerson, who is in his second year as coach at Army, may have his team in a position where they can get to a bowl game if they win this Saturday at Tulane. The Cadets are 3-2 and could easily be 4-1 or even 5-0, and they have done it with the ninth-ranked rushing game in the country (267 yards a game) as well as the second best turnover margin (+10). Tulane may be still celebrating after they beat Rutgers last week, so this could be a golden opportunity for West Point, in a pick’em contest in college football betting.
  • This is, I guess, both a good and a bad week for BYU. Last year’s quarterback, Max Hall, starts in the NFL for the first time with the Arizona Cardinals. This year’s team, however, is a problem. The Cougars fired their defensive coordinator after last week’s loss to Utah State, and now they could be missing five defensive starters as they host San Diego State. Would you have ever thought they would be a five-point HOME underdog at the outset of the season?
  • Boise State got dropped in the polls, even after doing all they could to run up the score against new Mexico State (or maybe not). There could be more "achievement" possible in that area as the Broncos amuse themselves until a November game at Utah, as they lay 39 points to Toledo in college football betting, we wonder – honestly – whether any line could be high enough this week!
