College Football Betting – Nevada vs UNLV

October 2, 2010

One of the nation’s most surprising teams will hit the road in this weekend’s college football betting. Can the Nevada Wolfpack improve to 5-0 as they visit the UNLV Rebels?

No. 25 Nevada Wolfpack (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) at UNLV Rebels (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS)

Saturday, October 2: 10:00 p.m.

NCAA Football Betting Odds:
Nevada: -20 ½
UNLV: +20 ½
Total: 62

It certainly seems likely, as Nevada is simply a juggernaut right now. They’re scoring, and scoring at will, thanks to Coach Chris Ault’s “pistol offense.” The Wolfpack rank No. 5 in the country, scoring a staggering 44 points per game.

The key to the pistol offense is a strong running game, and Nevada certainly has that thanks to a pair of seniors: Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua. There might be no better duo than these two, as they’ve combined to rush for just under 900 yards and 13 touchdowns, including eight by the speedy Kaepernick. But just because Kaepernick runs the ball a lot doesn’t mean he can’t pass it too. The 6’6 signal-caller has already thrown for over 900 yards and has tossed six touchdowns and just a single interception.

On the flip side of things are the UNLV Rebels, who are struggling under first year coach Bobby Hauck. They are playing opponents tough however, and might be a surprise college football betting pick this weekend.

After three straight losses to open the season, everything broke right for the Rebels, as they got their first win of the season last weekend, dominating New Mexico 45-10. In that game, quarterback Omar Clayton had a solid outing, throwing for 194 yards and three touchdowns, after throwing just one scoring pass the entire season. Also, the running game was sparked by little used freshman Tim Cornett. In three games, Cornett was quiet, but against

New Mexico he exploded, with two carries for 50 yards, including a 46 yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

While we’re not ready to say that UNLV is a player in the Mountain West, or even will win this game, we do expect them to do enough to cover the point spread. Because of that, take the Rebels as your college football betting pick.

UNLV may not have a sparkling record, but their defense really hasn’t been all that bad, especially last weekend when they gave up just 291 yards to New Mexico. Also remember that the Rebels entered their season opener against another powerful running team, Wisconsin, as heavy underdogs, but covered that point spread.

At the same time, you’ve got to think that at some point, Nevada may have a letdown.

The Wolfpack have been playing great football, and with back-to-back wins over Cal and BYU, may very well have gotten through the toughest part of their schedule (at least until playing Boise State later in the year). Will they be excited to play a sub .500 team they’re favored by close to three touchdowns against?

We’re not saying that Nevada will lose this game, because they likely won’t. But at the same team, take UNLV and the points in this one.

The Rebels are coming on strong under Hauck, and should be your college football betting pick this weekend.

The Pick: UNLV +20 ½
