College Football Betting – Bet on the Tennessee Over/Under

August 9, 2010

It was an offseason of turmoil at Tennessee, as coach Lane Kiffin left the program high and dry to head to Southern Cal, with Derek Dooley taking over just a few days into the new year.
But with college football betting season actually upon us, what should we expect from Tennessee on the field in 2010?

Let’s take a look, as we evaluate whether they’ll go over or under six regular season wins.

Tennessee Volunteers- Over 6 Regular Season Wins (+175) or Under 6 Regular Season Wins (-220):

The Volunteers enter this season with as many questions as anyone in this conference, as they’ll welcome in a new quarterback, an entirely new offensive line, several new starters on defense, and oh, by the way, a whole new coaching staff. But despite it, there are still reasons for optimism.

It starts at the quarterback position, where junior college transfer Matt Simms takes over under center. Not a ton is known about Simms (Other than that he’s Phil Simms son), but he was highly decorated coming out of high school, and played two years at Louisville.

Simms will be surrounded by skill position talent, albeit young talent. Tauren Poole and David Oku will both get their shot at carries, after only being used sporadically last year behind Montario Hardesty. The two combined for just 33 carries and two touchdowns in 2009.

At receiver, the top three returning pass catchers from last year- wide receivers Gerald Jones, Denarius Moore and tight end Luck Stocker- all return. As was previously mentioned though, this offensive line will breaking in FIVE new starters.

Much like the offense, the defense is talented, but thin and has little margin for error or injury. The best player on this unit is likely senior defensive end Chris Walker, who led this team with five sacks last year to go along with 23 solo tackles. Experienced linebacker LaMarcus Thompson returns to lead the back seven. Yet, the team still will have a lot of ground to make up. Especially after losing one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, Monte Kiffin, who went with his son to USC.

Finally, let’s look at the schedule, because when it comes to college football betting, it’s always key.

The Vols should be able to steal three wins out of conference with Tennessee-Martin, UAB and Memphis, but face a much stiffer challenge when Oregon travels across country to face them in Week 3. Then, there is always the tough SEC schedule, however the Vols do catch a break with most of their biggest games at home: Alabama, Florida and rival Kentucky all travel to Rocky Top. Tennessee will visit Georgia, LSU and South Carolina.

While all of America seems to be counting out the Vols, this writer is not. Take Tennessee OVER 6 wins.

Look it’s easy to be down on the Vols, this is a team that young and doesn’t have much depth. But at the same time, does anyone think the Tennessee players are sick of hearing how bad they’re going to be, and how they have no chance to compete?

Derek Dooley will fuel the fire, and figure out how to get this team to seven wins.

It won’t be easy, but when it comes to college football betting this season, take the OVER of six wins and the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Pick: Tennessee OVER 6 Regular Season Wins (+175)
