College Basketball Betting – Sunday Games This Weekend Test Duke And Washington
January 30, 2011
The two Sunday games involving top-25 teams are not quite daunting games for the favorites, but they are tricky. We’ll see how Duke and Washington fare on the road this weekend in their respective college basketball betting matchups:
Duke Blue Devils @ St. John’s Red Storm
Sunday, 1:05 PM ET
Duke has a better team than St. John’s – there’s no debate on that score. However, St. John’s merely needs to be better for 40 minutes. That’s the endless charm and possibility of college basketball. The Johnnies have cooled off since winning three of their first four Big East games this season, but the point remains that they did knock off Georgetown at home in Madison Square Garden. They did outclass Notre Dame in New York. The buzz and energy that surround a game in “The World’s Most Famous Arena” have given SJU a lift this season.
The Red Storm will spill the tank and play with maximum intensity against a Duke team that is still without the services of star freshman guard Kyrie Irving. The consensus in the college basketball community is that Duke was the favorite to win the national championship as long as Irving was on the floor. Now, the prevailing view is that Duke is one of several favorites to cut down the nets this year in Houston. The Blue Devils might still be the team to beat, but they’re no longer head and shoulders above the rest of the field. St. John’s will make a big, hard push at the Dukies, but coach Mike Krzyzewski will lead the Blue Devils to another win.
College Basketball Betting Pick: Duke
Washington Huskies @ Washington State Cougars
Sunday, 10:05 PM ET
The Washington Huskies have handled their transition admirably over the past few weeks. No longer able to put one of their most dynamic athletes, Abdul Gaddy, on the floor (Gaddy got injured roughly three weeks ago), coach Lorenzo Romar’s players have adjusted. Washington has dropped just one game and is firmly positioned as the leader of the Pac-10 Conference. Washington has defeated the two teams tied for second place in the league, UCLA and Arizona. The Huskies have not fallen at all in Gaddy’s absence.
However, with that having been said, Washington has not yet faced Washington State, and that could be a problem. Wazzu is the fourth-best team in the Pac-10 behind UCLA and Arizona. Coach Ken Bone’s Cougars defeated Baylor in Honolulu last December, and WSU also rocked Gonzaga as well. It’s also worth noting that while the Pac-10 normally pairs off its schools and plays two-game weekly rotations on Thursdays and Saturdays (for instance, the Oregon schools – Oregon and Oregon State – would play the Arizona schools, Arizona and Arizona State, on a Thursday and a Saturday), this game will be the only game these teams play during the week.
Washington State will get a full week to rest and prepare for Washington. With the game being played on Wazzu’s home court in Pullman, the perfect storm for an upset just might exist. Yes, take Washington State against a UW team that needs Abdul Gaddy on the court.
College Basketball Betting Pick: Washington State
