College Ball Power Poll – Kansas is Rising
February 23, 2009
The Kansas Jayhawks, last year’s NCAA Champions, have suddenly become a huge force in this year’s tournament. Kansas has won 9 out of 10 games and going into their game against the Oklahoma Sooners on Monday night (link to Oklahoma/Kansas game) the Jayhawks are easily one of the top teams to bet on in the BetOnline online sportsbook.
But Kansas isn’t the top team in the Power Rankings.
Let’s take a look at the rankings.
NCAAB: Power Rankings
1. Pittsburgh Panthers 13-7-1 ATS – - After their victory over the Connecticut Huskies, the Pitt Panthers destroyed the DePaul Blue Demons by 21 points. Unfortunately for bettors, the line was 25. Pitt didn’t cover, but they’re still tops because nobody has dominated the Huskies like the way the Panthers did last week.
2. Memphis Tigers 17-9 ATS – - The Tigers didn’t cover against UTEP when they beat the Miners by only 7 points, but they should steamroll over their next three opponents and bring their record against the spread to 20 and 9.
3. Louisville Cardinals 16-10 ATS – - They’ve covered three games in a row and are favored by Georgetown on the road by only 1 point. If they can cover that spread, and they should, the Cardinals would have covered four straight games in a row against Big East opponents.
4. Villanova Wildcats 14-9 ATS – - Villanova shows up as the third team in the top five from the Big East. The Wildcats covered on the road against Syracuse on Sunday and are no doubt making their way towards the top ten in the polls.
5. Arizona State Sun Devils 14-8 ATS – - The Sun Devils didn’t cover against rival Arizona on Sunday, but two victories against UCLA, and the UCLA loss to Washington State on Saturday, means that the Sun Devils are the top team in the Pac-10. A road trip against Washington and Washington State will go a long way in determining their seeding in the Big Dance.
6. Kansas Jayhawks 15-5 ATS – - Their huge Monday night game against the Sooners could determine how far they climb up the ladders. This team gets the Sooners with Blake Griffin either on the bench or not at 100%. That means they have no excuses.
7. Connecticut Huskies 10-11 ATS – - Sure, there are a lot of teams out there with better against the spread records, but the Huskies did bounce back from their loss to Pitt by beating South Florida 64 to 50. They didn’t cover but get a chance against Marquette. That’s a game that will go a long way in determining their chances in late March.
8. Michigan State Spartans 13-9-1 ATS – - The Spartans followed up a horrendous loss to Purdue with a victory and cover against the spread versus Wisconsin. I still say they will be tough in the tourney.
9. Oklahoma Sooners 12-9-1 ATS – - Their huge Monday night game against the Kansas Jayhawks could determine exactly where they end up, seeding wise, in the NCAA Tournament. This team needs Blake Griffin on the floor. His concussion could make their road much more difficult.
10. Arizona Wildcats 16-10 ATS – - They were on the verge of beating rival Arizona State and putting together their 8th straight victory. In any case, they’ve been fantastic against the spread lately, going 8 and 2 ATS in their last 10 games.
