Churchill Downs Betting – Winning Saddlecloth Number
May 1, 2010
Most of the time when you’re discussing an "odd or even" type of proposition, you’re dealing with a 50/50 probability for something to occur. However, in Kentucky Derby betting action, we’re going to pit the odd number horses against the even number horses and see how much of a coin flip this really is!
Kentucky Derby Betting Odds
Odd Saddlecloth: -115
Even Saddlecloth: -115
Odd Horses: Lookin At Lucky (+375), Noble’s Promise (+1000), Line Of David (+2400), American Lion (+2500), Make Music For Me (+4000), Devil May Care (+1000), Jackson Bend (+1400), Discreetly Mine (+2500), Dublin (+1200), Homeboykris (+4000)
Even Horses: Ice Box (+800), Super Saver (+1500), Stately Victor (+2500), Dean’s Kitten (+4000), Paddy O’Prado (+1600), Conveyance (+1200), Mission Impazible (+2000), Awesome Act (+900), Backtalk (+4000), Sidney’s Candy (+500)
Without even thinking, we can scratch a few horses on each side off the list as prospective winners of this race, as Make Music For Me, Discreetly Mine, and Homeboykris probably are off the list for the odds, while Dean’s Kitten and Backtalk are unlikely winners from the evens.
Yes, the favorite of this race (Lookin At Lucky) is in an odd saddlecloth, as is one of the crowd favorites (Devil May Care), and a sneaky longshot (Dublin), but there are just so many more potential winners on the even side of things.
Paddy O’Prado may be the most underrated horse on the board at +1600, while Super Saver, Sidney’s Candy, and Ice Box are considered the best options to try to knock off the favorite of this race.
Super Saver is popular because of his mount in this race, Calvin Borel. Borel won the 2009 Kentucky Derby riding Mine That Bird, and also captured the bed of roses for Street Sense in 2007. Many feel that Borel is just suited perfectly to run this race, and he has a great colt once again that he is riding at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Sidney’s Candy is one of the only other horses in this field outside of Lookin At Lucky that has three stakes wins under his belt. This was a colt that dominated the California circuit, with almost all of its damage coming at Santa Anita.
Awesome Act is also getting a lot of love from Kentucky Derby betting fans right now as well, as many feel that he could go off as the second favorite in this race. His win at the Gotham Stakes and solid showing at the Wood Memorial were great prep races, and his breeding with Awesome Again as his sire is as solid as any horse in this 20 colt field.
Even though we tend to believe that Dublin may have the best chance of any of the mid odd horses of winning this race, there are just so many more horses wearing even number saddlecloths that are contenders. We’ll go with strength in numbers in a relatively weak Kentucky Derby field this year.
