Chicago Bulls Could Get Torn Apart by Free-Agency

June 18, 2009

Ben Gordon looks like he’ll have some serious decisions to make when it comes to July 1st, 2009. That’s when free-agency officially explodes on your summer face and when NBA teams will try to lure superstars away from their current, or former teams. Good shooting guards are becoming a hot commodity in the NBA (just ask the Denver Nuggets) and Ben Gordon is of the very best as far as scoring goes.

That’s why Chicago has to do everything they can to keep him. Detroit, apparently, has an $11 million offer waiting for Gordon, but that is just a rumor spurned on by some internet blogger. Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon form the most uncontainable backcourt in the league. Together they averaged 44 points in a seven-game thriller against the Boston Celtics. If you want a contrast of how amazing that is, LeBron James and Mo Williams averaged 46.2 points together in the playoffs.

You don’t find that kind of dribble and drive chemistry in the NBA that often, and you certainly don’t find it by way of chance. Chicago was able to draft both Ben Gordon and Derrick Rose in the NBA draft, combing a true point-guard and a true-scorer in a backcourt that seems plays with such ferocity, you’d think Teen Wolf himself was back there.

The problem for Chicago will be retaining Gordon and Rose, while trying to find the money for contracts for Joakim Noah and figuring out what to do with Tyrus Thomas. Big men have been devoid in Chicago for years, and that whole Ben Wallace experiment just goes to show how desperate Chicago’s been to find some one of reputation to defend the glass and attack the rim from the pain.

For now, trying to find a big man on the free agent market might have to take a backseat to warding off potential suitors for Gordon’s unique and stunning skill sets. If the Pistons are indeed approaching near-double digit salary offers for Gorodn, then that ups the antee for Chicago. How they deal with this Ben Gordon fiasco will prove how serious they are about returning to the playoffs next Spring.

Right now, they’re a reasonable +5000 to win the NBA Championship, but those odds sky rocket if Gordon leaves town. Chicago must protect its home turf, like it did this year going 22-19 ATS at home. Keep Ben Gordon in the windy city at all costs.
