Chargers Looking For 4th Straight vs. Peyton and Colts in NFL Sunday Night Football

November 28, 2010

The Sunday night football game this week pits the San Diego Chargers, looking for their 4th straight victory, against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

The Chargers are providing their usual late season fireworks by going on yet another winning streak. SD is notorious for putting themselves in a hole and then coming up big towards the end of the season. Apparently 2010 is no different as the Bolts started out the season going 2 and 5.

Since then, the Bolts have won 3 straight games and look prepared to take over the AFC West. Can San Diego keep the winning streak going versus the desperate for a victory Indianapolis Colts?

Indianapolis Colts -3 -110 U 51 ½ -110

The trends favor San Diego in this matchup.

  • The San Diego Chargers are 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
  • The San Diego Chargers are 4 and 1 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
  • The Indianapolis Colts are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • The Indianapolis Colts are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 versus the AFC.

Although there are some nice trends for the Colts regarding this game, the fact is that the Chargers own Indianapolis. The Bolts have to be the pick to cover the spread in this Sunday night football game because they just really step it up against Indy.

Most football handicappers so far disagree with me as 61% of them are backing the Colts in the sportsbook. I don’t see it. If anybody has been watching Indianapolis play this weekend, they’ve no doubt noticed a couple of things. First, the injury to TE Dallas Clark is having an affect on the Indianapolis Colts. Jacob Tamme is a decent back up but he can’t spread the field the way that Clark can. Not only that, but Peyton’s favorite target this season, Austin Collie, is still feeling the lingering affects of a concussion he suffered versus Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago. His status for this game is in doubt. WR Blair White figures fill in admirably like he did last Sunday night but Peyton’s timing with White may not be as effective as it was with Collie.

The Chargers have no issues in any phase of their game. The Bolts sport the #1 ranked defense in the NFL. San Diego allows, on average, only 270 yards per game. They allow roughly 184 yards through the air and 87 yards on the ground. The Chargers’ D does give up 3 touchdowns a game, but that’s it.

On offense, San Diego has my pick for the league MVP in QB Phillip Rivers. I can’t stand Rivers. I really can’t, but I have to give him his just due this season. The man has been brilliant when throwing for 3177 yards, 23 touchdowns and only 9 picks. His QB rating is a monstrous 105 on the season. Although TE Antonio Gates is suffering from a foot injury, Rivers still has WR Patrick Crayton and WR Malcolm Floyd catching balls for him on the field. He also has WR Vincent Jackson back for this Sunday night football game.

The Colts are decent versus the pass, because they play a Cover 2, but Bolts’ RB Michael Tolbert is a handful to take down and rookie RB Ryan Mathews might be back from an injury. The Colts allow 139 yards on the ground per game. Even if it’s just Tolbert, and neither Darren Sproles nor Mathews can go, the Chargers should be able to rack up a ton of yards on the ground.

Indianapolis is a great team and they often cover spreads in the sprotsbook but they have a tough matchup in this Sunday night football game versus the San Diego Chargers. I have to back the Bolts in this game against the spread.
