CFL Football Odds – The Bad vs. The Good – Edmonton visits Montreal

September 19, 2010

The Montreal Alouettes defied the CFL Football odds by beating a healthy Hamilton team last week despite playing without their best player, Anthony Calvillo. Calvillo is questionable this week again but the good news for Montreal is that they are at home against a brutal Edmonton Eskimos team.

The Edmonton Eskimos were showing signs of life but then ran into the juggernaut Calgary Stampeders two weeks in a row. CFL Football odds are that things won’t get any better for Edmonton this week as they travel to Molson Stadium to take another one of the CFL elite, Montreal Alouettes.

Statistically speaking, the Eskimos are truly one of the worst team in the CFL. They have scored a league worst 18.7 points per game; they have a minus 19 turnover ratio and have the second worst passing offense in the CFL. Quarterback Ricky Ray has been awful behind a Swiss cheese offensive line, their starting running back is injured as is their most potent receiving threat.

The defense hasn’t been much better. The Eskimos have given up the most points in the CFL and are ranked dead last in rushing defense, giving up a staggering 162.6 yards per game on the ground.

The Montreal Alouettes own the best home record in the Eastern Conference (4-1) and proved last week that they don’t need Anthony Calvillo to win. Anthony McPherson filled in for Calvillo last week and threw for 238 yards and a touchdown while gaining 121 yards on the ground.

Running back Avon Cobourne is finally starting to heat up for the Alouettes and it couldn’t come at a better time. Expect him to be heavily featured this week against the CFL’s worst rushing defense.

Montreal’s defense is middle of the pack but likely won’t need to be great this week in order for the Alouettes to win. The unit recorded three sacks, forced a fumble and generated one interception last week against a decent Hamilton offense.

CFL Football Odds Outlook:

The Montreal Alouettes are 4-2 SU in their last six games versus the Eskimos. Edmonton’s inept offense was only able to generate 12 first downs last week and should be no match for the Alouettes at home. Turnovers will likely be Edmonton’s undoing again paving the way for the league’s second best scoring offense to do more than enough to cover the enormous spread.

CFL Football Pick: Montreal Alouettes -12
