CFL Football Betting – We Are Down to the Bitter End in the CFL Regular Season Schedule

October 22, 2010

There is two weeks to go in the CFL Football Betting Regular season and there is not one team that has been mathematically eliminated yet. Needless to say, this is a big weekend for a slew of CFL teams.

CFL Football Betting Lines:

Spread: Montreal -2 1/2

Moneyline: Montreal -140: Hamilton +120

Total: 53 1/2 points

The Montreal Alouettes have wrapped up the Eastern Conference in the CFL already but there is no talk of letting the foot off the pedal yet. The Als have won five of their last six games and now travel to Hamilton to play a team that they have beaten twice already this season.

Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo continues to be the best leader in the game and despite missing nearly a month, he is still in the Top 3 of most statistical categories. Calvillo has passed for 29 touchdowns this season compared to an amazingly low 6 interceptions this season. He figures to throw a lot this week again as starting running back Avon Cobourne will miss the game due to injury.

Hamilton has scored 30 or more points in three straight games and in 4 of their last 5 games. Quarterback Kevin Glenn leads the offense and is third in the CFL with a 300 yards per game average while receiver Arlan Bruce is tops in the CFL with 85 catches, 1291 yards. Bruce, Dave Stala and Marquay McDaniel better keep their heads up; the ball is going to be flying.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: Hamilton will need to run the ball, chew up the clock and keep the Montreal offense off the field. Unfortunately for the Tiger-Cats, they own the worst rushing offense in the CFL. Hamilton may be a desperate team but they are not on the same level as the Montreal Alouettes.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Montreal Alouettes -2 1/2

BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (5-10) vs. CALGARY STAMPEDERS (11-4)

Friday, October 22, 10:00 PM ET

Broadcast: TSN

CFL Football Betting Lines:

Spread: Calgary -9

Moneyline: BC +375: Calgary -475

Total: 55 1/2 points

The BC Lions had a chance to all but clinch themselves a playoff spot last week but lost in Edmonton. Now they travel to Calgary to play a team that they defeated only a few short weeks ago.

BC’s offense has floundered in the bottom third of statistical categories all season long and the quarterback carousel is one reason why. The winner of the QB competition Travis Lulay is hardly starting the world on fire – he only has five touchdown passes in the five games he’s started.

A bigger worry for the Lions is the defense that was shredded on the ground last week by a poor running team – Edmonton. They will have to right the ship soon – Calgary can run the ball!

The Calgary Stampeders clinched a playoff spot and created some distance between them and second place Saskatchewan last week with a win in Regina. Quarterback Henry Burris continues to make his mark for the MVP award and running back Joffrey Reynolds continues to be one of the more consistent contributors in the CFL. Calgary has the best run defense in the league (92 yards per game allowed, and allows a league low 24.5 points per game.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: The Calgary Stampeders were pissed when they lost to BC last month and will be out for revenge. The combination of Calgary’s superior talent, their balanced attack, and their home field advantage makes this an easy pick.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Calgary Stampeders -9

TORONTO ARGONAUTS (7-8) vs. WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (4-11)

Saturday, October 23, 4:00 PM ET

Broadcast: TSN

CFL Football Betting Lines:

Spread:  Winnipeg -5 1/2

Moneyline: OFF

Total: 49 points

The Toronto Argonauts got humiliated last week against Hamilton. They managed only 245 yards of total offense and three points. This week, they are on the road in Winnipeg to play what should be a winnable game. Quarterback Cleo Lemon has a typically bad outing last week but the Argos have won despite his pitiful numbers. A bigger worry is the fact that the CFL’s best rusher Cory Boyd only had 26 yards rushing. If he doesn’t put up 100, the Argos don’t win.

Winnipeg is on life support but they are not dead. The good news for them is that they are at home this week (they are 0-8 on the road this season). A win over Toronto would put them a half a step closer to a playoff spot. The offense has been good – running back Fred Reid is second in the CFL in rushing and receiver Terrence Edwards is second in the league in yards. The defense has been OK and has a CFL best 43 sacks.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: Winnipeg is 4-3 at home and a couple of those losses should have been wins. They are a decent club on both sides of the ball and they just may be better all around than Toronto. I like Winnipeg in a blowout this week.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers – 5 1/2

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (9-6) vs. EDMONTON ESKIMOS (5-10)

Saturday, October 23, 7:00 PM ET

Broadcast: TSN

CFL Football Betting Lines:

Spread: Saskatchewan -2 1/2

Moneyline: OFF

Total: 50 1/2 points

Saskatchewan is going to be fired up this week after losing it aspirations for a first place Western Conference finish last week. The Riders have lost two straight games and will look to take their frustrations on the Eskimos this weekend. Quarterback Darian Durant is the league’s best passer and he boast three quality receivers and a reliable running back. The injury bug has hit Saskatchewan however – kicker Luca Congi and receiver Rob Bagg are out for the season.

Edmonton, by virtue of their overtime win versus BC last week is still alive for the final CFL playoff spot. It hasn’t been the play of their quarterback that has kept them in it however; Ricky Ray has had a miserable season and continues to struggle mightily. At least last week they found a running game in Daniel Porter. Edmonton is unproductive on offense, they are turnover prone and their defense is nothing special.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: It is a shock to see the Rough Riders only favored by 2 ½ points in this game. They are better in every aspect of the game. This pick is easy.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Saskatchewan Rough Riders -2 1/2
