November 5, 2010

The CFL Football Betting season comes to a close on Sunday and there are some playoff positions yet to be determined. Some will be playing to build momentum, some are playing for their playoff lives and some are simply playing for pride.

CFL Football Betting Lines

Spread: Calgary -3

Moneyline: OFF

Total: 53 points

In a somewhat meaningless game, the Calgary Stampeders will look to finish the season strong against a hard luck Winnipeg team that is starting their fourth string quarterback and has lost eight games this season by four or fewer points. For Calgary, there is nothing on the line but momentum. They have owned the best scoring offense in the CFL all season (38.4 points per game) and have had the best defense in the CFL this year (331.7 yards per game – 92.2 on the ground). For Winnipeg, Terrence Edwards will look to finish as the league’s top receiver. He is currently #1 with 1325 yards and 12 touchdowns. Fred Reid will look to finish as the best running back in the league as well. He is currently second with 1325 yards.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: Calgary’s backup quarterback Drew Tate will likely see a lot of action in this game. He has seen a fair amount of game time so far so he should be up to the task. It is the Calgary defense that will be the difference however. Against fourth string quarterback Joey Elliot, they will have their way.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Calgary Stampeders -3

BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (7-10) vs. HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (9-8)

Saturday, November 6, 2:00 PM ET

Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, Ontario

CFL Football Betting Lines

Spread: BC -3 ½

Moneyline: OFF

The British Columbia Lions need a win on Saturday coupled with an Edmonton loss to Saskatchewan in order to qualify for the post season. After a 1-7 start, the Lions have played well under quarterback Travis Lulay. The Hamilton Tiger Cats will look to stretch their win streak over the Lions to four games but could be without the CFL’s leading receiver, Arlan Bruce. Hamilton has their playoff position sewn up and will be looking to right the ship after getting blown out by Calgary last week.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: The BC Lions are not spectacular in any aspect of the game but they seem to will themselves to victory. Only one team will bring the intensity on Saturday – the Lions. BC is 7-24-1 in their last 32 as betting favorite but I still like them to put the pressure on the Edmonton Eskimos with a win on Saturday.

CFL Football Betting Pick: BC Lions -3 ½

EDMONTON ESKIMOS (7-10) vs. SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (9-8)

Spread: Saskatchewan -1 ½

The Edmonton Eskimos will know by the time they take the field whether or not they have to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They are currently the hottest team in the CFL having won three straight games and five of six overall. Injured quarterback Ricky Ray will be back behind center on Saturday after Jared Zabransky filled in the previous two games. The Eskimos have been a terrible passing team this season and will once again lean on their third ranked rushing offense (123.8 yards per game), anchored by Daniel Porter, who took over mid-season from Arkee Whitlock. The Saskatchewan Rough Riders will be looking to gain back a little momentum after losing four straight games. Quarterback Darian Durant is the only QB in the league to pass for more than 5000 yards and will be looking to hold onto his Top position while Andy Fantuz will be looking to become the league’s receiving champion. He is currently second with 1303 yards.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: The Edmonton Eskimos Achilles heel has been their defense all season long. With a motivated Darian Durant, a motivated Andy Fantuz and with a fifth ranked CFL running back Wes Cates taking the field for Saskatchewan, they figure to be too much for the Eskimos. Saskatchewan is 6-1 at home this season and will want to send their rabid fans home happy.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Saskatchewan Rough Riders -1 ½

TORONTO ARGONAUTS (8-9) vs. MONTREAL ALOUETTES (12-5)

Sunday, November 7, 4:00 PM ET

Percival Molson Stadium, Montreal, Quebec

CFL Football Betting Lines

Spread: Montreal -6

Moneyline: OFF

Total: 49 ½ points

The Montreal Alouettes will be looking to sweep a home-and-home versus the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday but will sit their All-CFL quarterback Anthony Calvillo in favor of Adrian McPherson who looked decent in relief of Calvillo in the middle part of the season. The Toronto Argonauts will want to send a message to the Alouettes in this game and should be motivated for a big performance. The Argos have gotten by because of Special Teams this season (Chad Owens has a remarkable 3288 all-purpose yards this season – nearly 1300 yards more than the next in line) and running back Cory Boyd who is poised to finish as the CFL’s top rusher.

CFL Football Betting Outlook: The Montreal Alouettes have very little to play for and have given the Argonauts a chance in this game with their announcement of Adrian McPherson’s start. Toronto has played the Alouettes tough this season – the combination of special teams and Cory Boyd should be enough for the Argos to prevail.  Montreal is a huge favorite but I like Toronto to at least cover the spread on Sunday.

CFL Football Betting Pick: Toronto Argonauts +6
