CFL Betting – Two of the Best Tangle on Friday Night when Saskatchewan visits Montreal
August 6, 2010
CFL Betting will be rampant as a rematch of a classic 2009 Grey Cup and a rematch of an epic Week 1 game on the 2010 schedule takes place on Friday night in Montreal. It is a matchup that features two of the best passers in the CFL and two great running backs. But it also features two subpar passing defenses.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will try to make it two wins in a row against Montreal on Friday on the heels of an uninspiring win last week against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Second rated CFL passer Darian Durant will try to continue his stellar play against the Eastern powerhouse and will look to build upon his 481 yards passing and five touchdowns in the first meeting between the two squads.
Running Back Wes Cates, who is also ranked second at his position, will try to build of a 66 yard two touchdown effort last week and to add to his 466 yards rushing so far this season. The offense surely will not be the problem for the Roughriders and neither will be the kicking game that has Luca Congi playing at a very high level right now (7 field goals last week).
For Saskatchewan to be successful, they are going to have to step up their defense, particularly the pass defense that allowed Hamilton’s Arlan Bruce 16 catches, 272 yards and two touchdowns last week. The Riders have a league worst 1728 yards passing allowed, 345 yards passing against per game and the most touchdown passes against through five weeks.
The Montreal Alouettes have reeled off four straight wins since their Week 1 defeat at the hands of the same Saskatchewan Roughriders. Despite a scoring slump earlier in the season, the Montreal offense appears to be rounding into form led by quarterback Anthony Calvillo who has completed 70% of his passes for 1606 yards, 10 touchdowns and a measly 2 interceptions so far this season.
It is no fluke that receivers Kerry Watkins, Avon Cobourne and Ben Cahoon have enjoyed good seasons so far – Anthony Calvillo is making everyone around him look good.
Coinciding with the strong offensive play of the Alouettes is the improvement of the defense. This unit has really picked it up since giving up 54 points in Week 1. The Montreal Alouettes appear to be the most complete team in the CFL again and may have gotten their bad outing out of the way in Week 1.
CFL Betting Outlook:
Montreal is simply money at home. They have not lost a regular season game on home turf since 2008, a stretch of twelve straight games. Hamilton exposed Saskatchewan’s struggles with underneath pass coverage last week and you can expect the consummate pro Anthony Calvillo to take advantage of it. Friday night is a revenge game at home for the Alouettes – it’s pretty hard to bet against them!
The Roughriders have done well against the spread lately. They are 8-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 meetings and are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. Montreal is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
The Under seems to be in play here too if you believe the CFL Betting Trends. Under is 10-1 in the last 11 meetings in Montreal and Under is 4-0 in Alouettes last 4 vs. a team with a winning record. With the two high powered offenses in this game however, it may be best to stay away from this bet.
CFL Betting Pick: Montreal Alouettes – 6 ½ points
