The Steelers clinched a playoff spot last week despite losing to the New York Jets in week 15. They still can wrap up a first round bye if they win their final two games, first over the Panthers Thursday night and the Cleveland Browns. Both teams have been pushovers for much of the season so the only thing holding the Steelers back is an implosion of their defense and offense.
The Steelers have been relying on their defense to win four of their past five games. Other than allowing 22 points to the Jets in a loss last week, the Steelers defense has given up an average of 9 points in the four wins.
They need to get some production out of Ben Roethlisberger and the rest of the offense as in their past four games they’ve averaged just 18 points.
The Carolina Panthers have and a truly atrocious season, they’ve won two games after opening the season with five straight losses, then another seven game losing streak before they knocked off the Arizona Cardinals last weekend.
I know teams have a competitive fire but you have to wonder the logic of trying to win this late in the season with Andrew Luck projected to be the top prize of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Luck had a brilliant season at Stanford, leading the Cardinal to an 11-1 record and an Orange Bowl berth. He thrown for 3051 passing yards and 28 touchdowns.
Despite drafting Jimmy Clausen last season, it would be worth a first round pick for the sure thing of Andrew Luck.
The size of the line shouldn’t scare you off Thursday night as the Panthers are averaging just 13.1 points per game and allowing only 25 points per game.
This should be the game the Steelers use to pump up their offensive numbers, take the Pittsburgh Steelers laying the 14½ points at the NFL sports book.
