For those who didn’t see Duke’s embarrassing 62-13 loss to No. 1 ranked Alabama, well thank goodness you didn’t. It really was as ugly as the final score indicated. In the matchup, Duke allowed 28 first quarter points, trailed 45-13 at halftime, and ended the game allowing 626 yards of total offense to the juggernaut Crimson Tide.
Luckily, they get a much more manageable opponent this weekend in Army. To beat them, Duke will need to be able to throw the ball, something they’ve had success at all year. Currently, they rank 19th in the country, averaging 288 yards a game, behind the big arm of Sean Renfree. The sophomore from Arizona has now tossed for 852 yards on the season, and if you take out the Alabama game has actually been pretty good. He had back-to-back 350 yard passing games to open the season against Elon and Wake Forest.
On the opposite sideline, will be the Army Black Knights, who will look to improve to 3-1 on the season with a win in the Week 4 college football odds. Unlike Duke, Army will much prefer to keep things on the ground, as they actually rank dead last in all of FBS football in passing, throwing for just 56 yards per contest.
But what they lack in a passing game, they make up for in the running game, ranking 7th overall in that category, averaging 283 yards on the ground per game. Leading the charge is fullback Jared Hassin, who through three games has carried the ball for a team-high four touchdowns. Quarterback Trent Steelman splits his time running the ball and throwing it, with 148 passing yards and 143 yards rushing.
And it’s because of that offense, that we believe Army will get the win at Wallace-Wade Stadium this weekend. Take them as your pick in the Week 4 college football odds.
The old saying in college football, is that the best way to beat a strong passing game, is by simply keeping them off the field. Which is exactly what Army can do with Steelman, Hassin and their rushing attack.
Plus, if we learned anything from their loss to Alabama last weekend, it’s that Duke can beaten on the ground. Now by no means are we saying Army is anywhere close to Alabama, but at the same time, Duke gave up 315 yards rushing last week and 229 the week before against Wake Forest. If Army can protect the ball, they’ll be able to move it, and put points on the board against this Blue Devils defense, which ranks 111th in defending the run.
Army may be a small football school, but they’ll come into Wallace-Wade Stadium and score a big win this weekend. Take them to pull the upset in the Week 4 college football odds!
The Pick: Army +6 ½
