BYU Ready to Punish Wyoming as Sports Betting Favorites
October 23, 2010
The Brigham Young University Cougars are 10 ½ point sports betting favorites vs. the Wyoming Cowboys this Saturday, Oct. 23rd. After TCU trashed them, the Cougars beat the decent San Diego State Aztecs 24 to 21. The victory over the Aztecs occurred after 4 straight losses.
Now, BYU finds themselves as a close to 11-point sports betting home favorite. The team that they face on Saturday, the Wyoming Cowboys, bring the same straight up record to this dance, 2 and 4, as the BYU Cougars do.

The sports betting trends actually give the nod to the Cowboys ATS in this game.
- The Wyoming Cowboys are 8 and 1 ATS in their last 9 games on the road.
- The Wyoming Cowboys are 4 and 0 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
- The BYU Cougars are 2 and 8 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
- The BYU Cougars are 2 and 6 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite at home.
I’m confused as to why the sports betting odds are so grossly in favor of the Cougars in this game. The Cougars are 3 and 4 ATS on the season and have proven that they just aren’t very good at covering spreads.
Wyoming is a bad team, but they don’t face the same BYU team that beat them 52 to 0 in 2009 and they, like BYU, is 3 and 4 ATS on the season.
The Cowboys covered the sports betting odds spread in their game versus Air Force by losing 14 to 20 as 13 ½ point dogs. They covered a 27 ½ point spread versus Texas on the road in a 7 to 34 loss and then they beat Toledo by 5 points, 20 to 15 as 4-point favorites.
Wyoming is also coming off of their likely 2 most difficult games of the season. The Cowboys lost 0 to 45 as 34 ½ point dogs against TCU and then 6 to 30 as 22-point dogs to Utah. Both TCU and Utah deserve to be Top 5 ranked BCS teams.
So, there really isn’t any reason why the sports betting odds makers are giving so much love to the BYU Cougars in this game. BYU struggled against Air Force, a team that the Cowboys almost beat, when losing 14 to 35. The Cougars also barely beat a 30-point spread versus TCU.
I truly believe that the BYU Cougars are the better team and that they will win this game straight up, but I’m not sold on their ability to cover the sports betting spread. 10 points are just too many to give up to a Wyoming team that has shown guts against tough opponents and that’s going to relish the fact that they don’t have to face a team named Texas, TCU or Utah.
I have to back the Cowboys in this game. They might not be as good as BYU in BYU’s house, but they aren’t 10 ½ points worse than the Cougars either. Wyoming should keep this game within the sports betting number.
