Break the Bank On NFL Odds as Jaguars Host Falcons in Preseason Finale

September 2, 2010

While the final NFL preseason game means most teams will be resting their starters for the majority of the contest, I think tonight’s matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons is offering a bunch of value for NFL gamblers looking to break the bank against the NFL Odds in the BetOnline Football Sportsbook.

Both teams will take a long look at their reserve players as they try to make each team’s final 53-man roster. Following tonight’s contests, every NFL team must have their respective rosters down to the 53-player maximum by 6:00 PM ET on Saturday.

Atlanta Falcons (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U)
The Falcons are coming off a convincing 16-6 win over the Miami Dolphins last week and likely won’t play starting quarterback Matt Ryan (24-of-45, 213 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), more than a couple of series in this contest before turning to veteran backup Chris Redman and third-stringer John Parker Wilson.

Defensively, Atlanta will likely be without cornerback Dunta Robinson (hamstring) and tackle Peria Jerry (knee). The Falcons are just 15.3 points per game this preseason but are allowing even less (14.7 ppg).

Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS, 2-1 O/U)
Jacksonville picked up its first win of the preseason by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-13 last week just as I predicted in the BetOnline NFL News section.

Like the Falcons, the Jaguars will not play starting quarterback David Garrard for very long before turning to veteran backup Luke McCown.

The former starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McCown has completed 65 percent of his passes while throwing five touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Analysis: The Jaguars haven’t played particularly well this preseason and I certainly don’t believe they are a better team than the Atlanta Falcons.

However, I do think the Jags are the correct pick for tonight’s contest – in large part because they have the far better backup quarterback in Luke McCown.

As a matter of fact, McCown has clearly outplayed Jacksonville starter David Garrard this preseason – and probably should be starting, were it not for Garrard’s strong game against the Bucs the last time out.

The Jaguars have averaged a fine, 24.0 points per game this preseason while allowing 22.7 points per game defensively, but I like them to narrowly cover the NFL game odds in this one thanks to a really strong outing from their reserves, most notably veteran signal-caller Luke McCown.

Play the Jags to cash in as a 3-point home favorite while the Under plays out against the NFL Odds Total.

The Jaguars kick off their 2010 regular season schedule on Sept. 12 at home against Denver while the Falcons open the same day at Pittsburgh.

Expert NFL Pick: Jaguars -3 Points/Under 37 Total Points.
