Big East Tournament Betting – Marquette and West Virginia could be the Game of the Night

March 10, 2011

Big East Tournament Betting is one of the most entertaining times of the year as not only is it played at Madison Square Garden, but it features some of the best teams in the country. And oh yea, there are always upsets. Tonight Marquette and West Virginia lock up in a game that figures to be extremely close from start to finish; we just have to pick a winner.

Marquette Golden Eagles (19-13) vs. West Virginia Mountaineers (20-10)

Wednesday, March 9 – 9 PM ET (Madison Square Garden – New York, NY)

TV: ESPN

The defending Big East tournament champions are in tough tonight against a Marquette team fresh off a big win over Providence and seem to be playing very good basketball at the moment. Combine that with the fact that the Golden Eagles already have a win over the Mountaineers, and you know that this is going to be one hell of a basketball game. Marquette knows they need a strong showing in this tournament to earn an NCAA tournament big, and a win over West Virginia would likely be more than enough to get them in.

College Basketball Betting Spread:

Marquette Golden Eagles +110

West Virginia Mountaineers -2, -130

Total: 137

West Virginia ended their season the best way possible as they beat two very good teams in Connecticut and Louisville to end the year with five wins in seven games. The thing about the Mountaineers is, they just don’t play that well on the road. Granted this is a neutral site game, but Marquette already has a win at MSG under their belt and will feel much more comfortable in the early goings of tonight’s game.

Here are some Big East Tournament Betting Trends:

  • Favourite is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
  • Golden Eagles are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
  • Golden Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games as an underdog.
  • Golden Eagles are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games as an underdog.
  • Over is 6-0 in Mountaineers last 6 neutral site games.

The keys guys for Marquette will once again have to be Darius Johnson-Odom and Jimmy Butler, who combined to score 42 points but also played some stellar defence against the Big East’s leading scorer, Marshon Brooks. West Virginia doesn’t have one guy that really kills you; they just play solid fundamental basketball. Just look at their stats: they only put up under 70 points per game, their leading scorer averages just 14.3 and they only beat one ranked team on the road this year.

I’m not knocking this team as they put up a very impressive record in the Big East, I just think Marquette will be the more energized team tonight and will pull of the Big East Tournament Betting upset over WVU.

Big East Tournament Betting Pick:  Marquette +110
