Jan. 29th – NCAA BB Games – Afternoon
#10 Syracuse Orange (18-3) at Marquette Golden Eagles (13-8)
Where: Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
When: 3:00 pm EST
Fair Basketball Odds: Marquette -4 ½
Analysis: Marquette isn’t really “awesome”, but they are a decent team and, until their last 2 games, had been stellar against the basketball lines spread in the sportsbook. The Golden Eagles have lost 2 games both straight up and ATS in a row. They dropped a game to the Notre Dame Irish 75 to 80 as 3 ½ point road dogs and then to the Connecticut Huskies 68 to 76 as -5 point home favorites. Marquette could be a bigger fave over Syracuse than what I’ve listed as fair. The Orange has dropped 3 games in a row both straight up and against the spread to Pittsburgh, Villanova and, in a shocker, the horrific Seton Hall Pirates. What’s up with the ‘Cuse? Jimmy B. will get his guys back on track, but I’m not sure it will happen on Saturday versus one of the best 3-point shooting teams in college hoops. I’m backing Marquette.
#15 Wisconsin Badgers (15-4) at Penn State Nittany Lions (11-8)
Where: Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, Pennsylvania
When: 4:00 pm EST
Fair Basketball Odds: Penn State +5 ½
Analysis: Everybody now understands that Penn State is not a walkover in the ultra-tough Big Ten. The Nittany Lions have gone 6 and 2 versus the sports betting online spread in their last 8 games. They’ve gone 5 and 0 ATS in their last 5 games. Wisconsin is 6 and 3 against the spread in their last 9 and has gone 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5. This is not an easy game to handicap. That’s why I firmly believe the Badgers will be close to a 5 ½ point road fave in this contest. The trends favor the Badgers who are 10 and 2 ATS in the last 12 meetings between these two squads, but I’ll take the points just because Penn State gets the Badgers at home.
#9 Brigham Young Cougars (20-1) at New Mexico Lobos (14-7)
Where: University Arena, Albuquerque, New Mexico
When: 4:00 pm EST
Fair Basketball Odds: BYU -6½
Analysis: When Kevin Durant tweets that you’re the “best scorer in the world”, you’re doing something right. My man Jimmer cost me money the other night when he laid 43 on the San Diego State Aztecs. How can I ever go against JF again? Fredette has scored 40 points or more in 3 out of BYU’s last 4 games. The Cougars are only 4 and 2 against the college basketball spread in their last 6 games, but are 7 and 3 ATS versus New Mexico in the last 10. Jimmer might put up 50 on Saturday just to top himself and impress former scoring great, Lobos’ coach Steve Alford.
