Big 10 Power Poll – Week 1 Scares for Ohio State and Iowa

College football betting – big ten power poll

There were a ton of near huge scares for Big Ten bettors in Week 1 of the college football betting season, but aside from the Illini, everyone else in the conference successfully moved to 1-0. Here’s how BetOnline stacks up the squads heading into Week 2…

1: Michigan Wolverines (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Michigan fans were all set to throw HC Rich Rodriguez to the wolves if Big Blue had lost to Western Michigan in Week 1, but the Wolverines responded by blowing out the boys from Kalamazoo 31-14. Though Rodriguez still really hasn’t settled on a quarterback yet for his spread option attack, QB Tate Forcier looked impressive against Western Michigan, throwing for 179 yards and three touchdowns.

Up Next: Home vs. Notre Dame

2: Purdue Boilermakers (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Welcome to the college football betting scene, Ralph Bolden! In the first start of his collegiate career, Purdue’s top running back racked up 234 yards and two scores on the ground. Even though the Rockets put up a whopping 423 passing yards on the Boilers, they were still good enough to score the 52-31 victory. The defense had better improve and QB Joey Elliott had better not have too many more three interception performances if the Boilermakers think they’re going bowling this year, though.

Up Next: Away @ Oregon

3: Michigan State Spartans (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Spartans were one of the only teams in the Big Ten that faced an inferior opponent that really came out and put on a spectacle. Sparty outgained Montana State 493-160 for the game in MSU’s 44-3 win. QBs Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol combined to throw for five touchdowns without an interception, while WR Blair White led the way in receiving with nine catches for 162 yards and a pair of scores.

Up Next: Home vs. Central Michigan

4: Wisconsin Badgers (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU) Before letting the Huskies put two senseless touchdowns on the board in the final eight and a half minutes of the game, the Badgers seemed like they would comfortably cover the 16.5-point spread. The backdoor was painful, but at least Wisconsin looked a lot better in victory against an FBS opponent than several of its Big Ten counterparts did against FCS foes…

Up Next: Home vs. Fresno State

5: Penn State Nittany Lions (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU) The Nittany Lions opened up a 31-0 halftime lead against Akron, but took their foot off the gas pedal and ended up narrowly missing out on covering the 29.5-point spread. QB Daryll Clark got his Heisman Trophy campaign kicked off in style, as he threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the romp.

Up Next: Home vs. Syracuse

6: Northwestern Wildcats (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Northwestern posted a sizeable 47-14 triumph over Towson in Week 1 behind five rushing touchdowns. QB Mike Kafka completed 15 of his 20 passes for 192 yards in his first collegiate start. WR Andrew Brewer hauled in six balls for 145 yards and the offense’s only passing touchdown. Tougher tests are on the horizon for this young team, though.

Up Next: Home vs. Eastern Michigan

And the rest…

7: Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU)

8: Iowa Hawkeyes (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU)

9: Indiana Hoosiers (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU)

10: Ohio State Buckeyes (0-1 ATS, 1-0 SU)

11: Illinois Fighting Illini (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)
