Betting Trends for Baseball – Don’t Bet on These Home Teams
May 17, 2010
They say that home is where the heart is, but that just hasn’t been the case for a few teams across baseball this year. We’ll see why the NL Central is on display for the wrong reasons in our MLB betting outlook.
Season Standings
1: Milwaukee Brewers (4-14, -$1,290) – Yuck! Even the Orioles have more wins at home than the Brewers do! The Brew Crew are in just a mess load of trouble right now trying to pitch in their own park. They’ve allowed at least four runs in 17 of their 18 games, with the only notable mark in the bunch coming in the form of a 17-3 win over Pittsburgh back on April 26th.
2: Houston Astros (7-15, -$909) – Here’s a case of a team that is just pretty darn right awful. The ‘Stros have been killing MLB betting fans both home and away all season long, and the biggest factor in that is that they just aren’t scoring runs. They’re averaging less than three runs per night, and that just isn’t going to cut it. Maybe Houston needs to take a trip to Miller Park soon to try to right the ship…
3: Chicago Cubs (9-10, -$784) – The Cubbies just narrowly avoided the disaster of getting swept at home by the Pirates this past week. The oddsmakers just don’t do this team any favors, as it feels like they are constantly laying -180 to -220 chalk when they’re playing at Wrigley Field. That’s going to change when the schedule gets harder, but it feels like Chicago’s record is only going to get worse and worse as it gets warmer in the Windy City.
Who’s Not?
1: Arizona Diamondbacks (0-5, -$614) – In a recent six game home stand against the Dodgers and Brewers, Arizona was outscored by a combined score of 52-15. In the words of ESPN college football analyst, Lee Corso: "That’s a yo!" The D’Backs didn’t score more than three runs in any of the six games and allowed at least six in the final five of them to fall to a woeful 7-11 as guests on the year.
2: Milwaukee Brewers (0-5, -$590) – Plating runs hasn’t been the issue for Milwaukee this year, as it scored what should’ve been an ample 20 runs in a six game home stand that ended last night. No, that’s not fantastic, but the pitching staff should’ve certainly been able to keep the Phillies and Braves from scoring 51 runs in those six days, right?
3: St. Louis Cardinals (2-3, -$534) – Here’s Exhibit A as to why you don’t lay -300 chalk in an MLB game on a regular basis. Shame on St. Louis for getting swept in its own building against arguably the worst team in baseball (Houston). The oddsmakers really punished the Redbirds for it as well, as they dropped $734 in those three games. The end result? The Cards have now dropped five out of six overall and have suddenly seen their once 5.5 game lead disappear, as they’re looking up at the Reds in the NL Central standings.
