Betting The Super Bowl Spread
February 7, 2010
The spread for the Super Bowl is (at least for the moment) 4 1/2 in favor of the Colts. Picking the Saints will play +165 and the Colts -200. This means that the boys in Vegas are assuming that this game is going to be decided by more then a field goal. The prevailing theory here is that the offensives are so good, and the defenses have too many questions to keep it close.
Both teams have the ability to put the ball in the end zone, and when betting the spread this Super Bowl Sunday, all you have to ask yourself is; who is going to get the last touchdown?
I have had this conversation about the spread with everyone that will listen this week. The spread is the spread for a reason. No one seems to think that the Colts are going to win by a field goal. And history would certainly support their inability to do so. But these two offenses can put up an incredible amount of points on the board and have been doing so almost at will all year.
The loss of Dwight Freeny (or at least the news that he is not 100%) has made the prospect of New Orleans scoring last a lot more plausible. The Saints have dominated the air against much better defenses then the Colts this year, and without that blind side pressure, it seems reasonable to assume that the Saints could easily cover, if not win outright.
The Indianapolis Colts however, do have the best QB in the NFL, and a win in this Super Bowl would certainly force his inclusion in every conversation surrounding ‘the best of all time’. Every time the media and fans alike have questioned Manning’s resolve, he has answered with resounding authority.
So will the spread be covered? Or will the spread be something that we laugh about next week. Will we be sitting in sports bars watching short track speed skating thinking; ‘i can’t believe they thought the Saints were going to keep it close.’
Well I will be watching short track speed skating. And I will be having this conversation. And I will be saying I told you so. I what I will have told you is that the spread will be covered, and not only covered, but the Saints will win.
