Betting on the Heisman Trophy – 2010 Second Tier Picks

August 1, 2010

It seems like it was just yesterday that the Alabama Crimson Tide were hoisting the 2010 BCS National Championship trophy, marking the end of another incredible season. But as the summer turns into the fall, it’s time to once again start making your college football bets.

After previously looking at the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, let’s now look at the next tier:

Ryan Mallett (+1000): Anyone who watched a single Arkansas game in 2009 knows the truth about Mallett: There isn’t a more physically gifted college quarterback than the 6’7 Razorbacks junior. Quite frankly there aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL with an arm as strong as his.

So as we enter the 2010 college football season, it’s no wonder that he’s one of the favorites to take down the Heisman Trophy. He’s tutored by one of the best offensive coaches in the game, Bobby Petrino, and has plenty of big targets to play pitch and catch with, including Greg Childs and Jarius Wright. The two juniors combined for almost 100 catches last year.

Even after missing spring football with an injury, most expect Mallett to improve on a 2009 campaign that saw him throw for 3627 yards and 30 touchdowns. And if he can do that, he’s as good a bet as any to take home this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Jacory Harris (+1200): If there is one quarterback who has the natural gifts to match Mallett, it’s probably Miami junior to be Jacory Harris. He threw for 3,352 yards in 2009, and returns his top playmakers this season, in Leonard Hankerson and LaRon Byrd.

If Harris is to take home the Heisman though, one thing he must improve on were the dismal 17 interceptions that he threw last season, to go along with his 24 touchdowns. Miami is a talented team, but won’t go anywhere if their quarterback isn’t more careful with the ball.

Still, there aren’t many players in the game more talented than Harris. If he can keep the turnovers down, he’s one of the best college football bets on the board.

Noel Devine (+1200): Many college football fans have known about Devine since way back in his high school days, when Youtube clips of the dynamic 5’8 running back blew up all over the internet. Now heading into his senior year, Devine has one last chance to leave his stamp on college football.

Statistically Devine is as good as any back in the game, having rushed for 1200 yards as a sophomore in 2008 and following that up with a 1465 yard campaign in 2009. And with an inexperienced quarterback under center in Morgantown, expect the offense to focus around Devine more in 2010 than ever before.

The only concern with Devine is his size. Can a 5’8, 175 lb. back handle a 25-30 carry a game workload? With the season just around the corner, we’re set to find out.

There aren’t many better backs in the game better than Devine. And there aren’t many better college football bets on the board either.
