Betting College Football Tips – How To Play UNC -6.5 vs. Virginia
October 16, 2010
Early in the season, I pointed to the North Carolina Tar Heels as a trendy team to take since they had a big upside for those of us betting college football.
Opening the season with a two straight losses hurt their billing, but UNC has ripped off three straight wins since then. Along the way, they’ve gone a hefty 4-1 ATS on the season as they visit the Virginia Cavaliers this weekend.
The biggest problem when betting the UNC Tar Heels in the future is the fallout from the scandal that’s hit Chapel Hill. Defensive tackle Marvin Austin has been dismissed from the team, along with receiver Greg Little and defensive end Robert Quinn.

Betting College football was supposed to be fun with the UNC Tar Heels joining the pack of spread busters, but the distraction of the mentioned players has to weigh on the team. Well, that’s at least what conventional wisdom suggests. It could just as well galvanize them.
Quarterback T.J. Yates, a senior at UNC is delivering the goods this year and has 1,170 passing yards with 8 touchdowns and just one interception. He hasn’t been lights out, but he’s been productive, smart and steady, which is exactly the kind of quarterback you hope for when betting college football.
You are, after all, betting on kids.
UNC Tar Heels (3-2) vs. Virginia Cavaliers (2-3)
Saturday, October 16th — Scott Stadium — 6:00pm EST
College Football Betting Line: UNC -6.5 (47.5)
This will remain a battle of balanced offenses. The Virginia Cavaliers have put up 266.4 yards per game, along with 128.4 on the ground ranking them 26th and 83rd respectively. Their offense, however, has sputtered in scoring position. They’ve managed just 26.2 points per game.
When you consider the history of this matchup, it makes it tough for those of us college football betting this weekend who had our eye on this matchup in the schedule. UNC has gone just 2-8 SU and 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games to Virginia, so logic lent itself to the idea of the Tar Heels restoring good faith to their side while sending Virginia into a tailspin.
The Cavaliers are just 1-2 ATS this season, losing their last two games against FSU and Georgia Tech by a combined score of 35-67. It’s not so much that the oddsmakers have them in the cross hairs; it’s actually the opposite. Virginia is simply underperforming across the board.
Considering their only wins this year are against Richmond and VMI (go ahead, look it up), you can’t put too much stake in to Virginia, even when they’re playing at home. I don’t trust this team against the line, and in conference play they’re just 0-2 SU this year.
Betting college football gets dicey when you consider all the intruding factors (UNC on the road, terrible history, trauma on school grounds) but the fact remains that UNC is simply a better football team, and far more disciplined than the product that Virginia is toting on the field. I recommend siding with UNC if you’re going to get your grubby mitts on this one.
This is a very tight line to play, but I encourage those of you betting college football’s lesser matches to forgt about UNC’s in-house troubles so you can properly reflect on their on-field success.
