Betting Against Oklahoma With Low College Football Odds to Win the Big 12 This Season
August 19, 2010
The Oklahoma Sooners are the definitive favorite in the sportsbook at +125 college football odds to win the Big 12 this season. The odds on Oklahoma are surprisingly low to me considering that they are coming off of a 5-loss season.
The love in the Big 12, however, keeps flowing to the Sooners who no doubt feel that they deserve to receive some good luck after having so many things go badly for them last season. Oklahoma is a solid program and betting against them is tough, but I have to because the odds are so low on them to win what usually is a tough conference in the Big 12.

Big 12 Conference &ndash Best and Worst Bets
** Odds to win the conference
Best Bet: Nebraska Cornhuskers +200
Their Holiday Bowl victory was very impressive. Nebraska’s defense shut down a very good Arizona Wildcat offense and the Cornhusker’s offense played very well. In Bo Pellini’s third year as head coach, Nebraska is expected to be better this year than they were last year even though they lost a few key players on the defensive side of the ball. A lot of the expectations in Lincoln have to do with the fact that QB Zac Lee is healthy and that back-ups Cody Green and Taylor Martinez will all be able to add different skills to the QB position. The defense, though, is where everybody is expecting truly great things to happen. Even though Nebraska lost those key starters on the defensive side, Pellini has instituted a new Peso defense which utilizes a hybrid safety/linebacker position. That, and the fact that DT Jared Crick returns and highly touted community college LB LaVonte David transfers to Nebraska, should make the defense the best in the Big 12 like it was last season. That’s enough for me to say that these guys are the team to bet based on the college football odds in the sporstbook.
Second Best Bet: Texas Longhorns +200
Colt McCoy is no longer under center for Texas. Because of that, the Longhorns have been relegated to the second choice by most sports gamblers to win the Big 12 this season. I’m not buying it. QB Garrett Gilbert is another one of those quarterbacks with a super impressive high school career on his resume. He also got a chance to play against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship Game. Although there are question marks surrounding RB starters Tre’ Newton and Fozzy Whitaker and WR John Chiles, this is Texas. The offense is going to be clicking masterfully after the ‘Horns stomp all over Rice and Wyoming in the first two weeks of the season. On the defensive side, DT Calvin Howell, who took a medical redshirt last season, is going to terrorize Big 12 quarterbacks if he stays healthy. Texas could win the Big 12 again.
Worst Bet: Oklahoma Sooners +125
There are just too many questions on this team for me to bet them at the +125 college football odds to win the Big 12. In the past, it was a foregone conclusion that Oklahoma would win the Big 12 but Nebraska has gotten much better in recent years and Texas has taken the place of Oklahoma as the the premier Big 12 program. The Sooners’ offensive line is supposed to be healthy this season but that doesn’t mean that it will be able to push around the defensive lines at Nebraska and Texas. Not only that, but QB Landry Jones is going to have to play with a ton more pressure on him this season than last when he was filling in for Sam Bradford. How will he respond? Then, there’s the schedule. Florida State is tough this year, Air Force is never a joke, and Cincinnati will be out to prove that they can win without coach Brian Kelly. Those non-conference teams might rough up Oklahoma before the Sooners even start Big 12 play.
Others To Consider
Missouri +1200 – - QB Blaine Gabbert returns along with 17 other starters. This team has the experience to be a force in thee Big 12 this season.
Texas A&M +1600 – - The defense was terrible last season, yes, but it was young and returns 9 starters this season. New D-coordinator Tim DeRuyter has a big job but a lot to work with.
Texas Tech +1400 – - The team has always had talent. Now, it’s got a BCS National Championship winning coach in former Auburn head man Tommy Tubberville. If Tech takes to his defensive philosophy, and the offense stays powerful, there are worst stabs in the world based on the college football odds than betting on the Red Raiders to win the Big 12 this season.
