Bet The Superbowl – Watch The Guys Who Can Turn It Into A Chess Match

February 4, 2011

People who bet the Superbowl are going to watch the guys who can turn this thing into a chess match, which means the coaches of the two teams. Mike Tomlin has two Super Bowl rings, one as an assistant and one as a head coach, while Mike McCarthy is looking for his first one ever. The two will match wits at Super Bowl 45, which is set to begin at 6:30 PM ET on Sunday at Cowboys Stadium (artificial turf) in Arlington, TX. In the odds that have been established for those who bet on the Superbowl, the Packers are a 2.5-point favorite, with the total posted at 44 points.

When you bet the Superbowl, it’s never a bad idea to size up the head coaches who will prowl the sidelines in the game. As the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike Tomlin inherited a team that won a Super Bowl under Bill Cowher, and was probably a beneficiary of the "Rooney Rule," which would seem perfectly appropriate, given the fact that it was named after the family that controls the Steelers.

There is no doubt that Tomlin was a little young to be a head coach, as he was hired at the age of 34. But he had built himself a nice resume, having worked with Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden at Tampa Bay, where he had charge of the defensive backs, and in fact was part of the Super Bowl 37 staff there, and no doubt he took great pride as his defensive backs returned two interceptions for touchdowns. His work was impressive enough that he then took over as defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings. Under his leadership, Pittsburgh maintained its reputation as a nasty defensive team. And at the age of 38, he is about to be the head coach for his second Super Bowl team.

As you bet the Superbowl, you need to know about Mike McCarthy as well. While Tomlin would never be considered the talkative type, McCarthy is a guy who doesn’t seem to possess an ounce of flamboyance. But to add a special twist to this story, McCarthy is a native of Pittsburgh who grew up a rabid Steeler fan. he also worked as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

McCarthy slipped somewhat quietly into his job in Green Bay. He was the offensive coordinator in New Orleans and San Francisco before getting an opportunity to return to Green Bay Packers , where he had served one season as quarterbacks coach.

You might say, in compiling an analysis to bet the Superbowl, that McCarthy, whether his name has much cachet or not, has become a highly successful head coach in the league. In 2007, he was named coach of the year, and also deserves that honor this season. Why is that, you ask? Well, part of a coach’s mission is to delegate authority and responsibilities to those under him. McCarthy’s the man behind the Packer offense, and he has out some extremely capable in charge of the Green Bay defense in Dom Capers. This Packer staff has withstood the loss of 14 players to the injured reserve, and the fact that this team is here is a testament to the resourcefulness of this coaching staff. When you bet on the Superbowl, resourcefulness isn’t a bad thing to have on your side.
