If you’re a 49ers fan, sadly the story in this one has nothing to do with football. That’s because after a disastrous season that saw San Francisco go from Super Bowl favorite to NFC laughingstock, the 49ers fired coach Mike Singletary after last weekend’s game.
Having an interim coach won’t ail San Francisco’s woes at quarterback though, where the 49ers have struggled all year. This week’s starter seems as though it’ll be Troy Smith, who coincidentally is the man who started last weekend in Singletary’s final game. Against St. Louis, Smith threw for just 153 yards, before being replaced by Alex Smith, who was hardly much better. If Alex Smith does start this Sunday (it hasn’t been announced who’ll be under center), beware when you make this Bet on NFL wager. That’s because Alex Smith is one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in the NFL, throwing for 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season.
Meanwhile, Arizona enters this game with their quarterback situation in the slightly better hands of John Skelton.
Like San Francisco, Arizona has struggled at the position all year, using Matt Leinart, Derek Anderson and Max Hall amongst others. Yet, the big, strong-armed Skelton looks like he may be a keeper after leading Arizona to a win last Saturday evening against Dallas. In that game, Skelton threw for 183 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the Cardinals down the field to set up a game winning Jay Feely field goal. The rookie from Fordham has won two of the three games he’s started this season.
Can Skelton make it three of four wins, and send the Cardinals into the offseason on a positive note? We believe so, which is why we encourage you to go ahead and back Arizona when you Bet on NFL football this Sunday.
Really though, this one is more about San Francisco than it is Arizona.
The truth is that the 49ers quit on coach Singletary, and even with him out the door, we’re not sure they’ll play any harder in a meaningless game here. It also probably isn’t a good sign that after 15 games, the 49ers still aren’t sure who their quarterback will be.
Either way, all signs point toward Arizona. There are a lot of mistakes you might make right around New Year’s, but picking the Cardinals when you Bet on NFL football won’t be one of them.
