The Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) lead the AFC North and this becomes a pivotal bet on NFL game for playoff positioning and potential home field. New England (6-2) is tied with the NY Jets on top of the AFC East and enters this contest salty after getting its clocked cleaned by the Browns in Cleveland last week. Because of the surprising result, the Patriots have been installed nice sized underdogs in this spot.
Pittsburgh’s dominating defense continues to make it difficult for opponents to establish a ground game, as the Steelers boast the league’s best run defense allowing just 58 yards per game. The question in this contest however will be whether or not the Steelers can slow Tom Brady and the Patriots passing attack. When you bet on NFL games, know that New England coach Bill Belichick is the best in week to week game planning. Expect Brady to have had plenty of passing plays designed to attack a Pittsburgh pass defense that allows 240 passing yards per game.
On the surface, the stats show Pittsburgh with a big edge defensively in this contest, as the Patriots allow 386 yards per game and 6.8 yards per play to rank in the bottom five of the NFL in both categories. But things are not always as they seem statistically when you bet on football games. Pittsburgh’s defense does not allow many sustained drives but can be susceptible to the big play, and Brady should have a big day passing both in the short time patterns and taking some shots down the field.
Pittsburgh’s offense can be very balanced, but big Ben Roethlisberger should also have a big day passing against a very suspect New England secondary that allows 7.3 yards per pass play to rank #27 in the NFL. Despite less than stellar yardage numbers from the Steelers offense, they average 5.4 yards per play and should see those numbers rise against the weak New England defense.
NFL Insider Tip: The over is 8-2 in New England’s last ten games, and 6-1-1 over in Pittsburgh’s last eight games as favorite. The over has cashed over 67 percent at Heinz Field the past 3+ years.
During the Roethlisberger era, Pittsburgh has had success against Belichick defenses that had more talent, averaging over 25 points per game their last five meetings. This bet on NFL contest is the third straight prime time game for Pittsburgh and sets up for plenty of passing, big plays and scoring.
My NFL Predictions: New England/Pittsburgh Over 45 -110
