August 20, 2010

Is Ohio State a sure bet to win the Big 10 conference this college football season?  The NCAA football betting odds have the Buckeyes at -250 to win it again.  However, this seems to be a conference for football bettors to make some money on.

Odds To Win the Big 10 Conference:

  • Ohio State                   -250
  • Iowa                            +350
  • Wisconsin                    +350
  • Penn State                   +650

Led by head coach Jim Tressel, who led Ohio State to win the BCS National Championship in 2002, the team finished the 2009 season on a high note, with a 26-17 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl. Since 2005, Ohio State has won the Big 10 conference five times.  However, in two of those years, the conference title was shared with Penn State.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor returns for his junior season.  Last season he had 166 completions for over 2,000 yards and eighteen touchdowns as he won the MVP award for the 2010 Rose Bowl. Many NCAA predictions have scouted Pryor to win this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Iowa enters the 2010 season at +350 in the football betting odds led by twelfth-year head coach Kirk Ferentz. The Hawkeyes face Ohio State at home late in the season, in a football betting battle that many predict to decide the conference.  The team is packed with relatively young but up-and-coming players, such as junior wide receiver Marvin McNutt, who will play hand-in-hand with quarterback Ricky Stanzi, who has an 18-4 record as a starter and a 2009 season passing total of over 2,400 yards.  All this team needs is to work out its early-season kinks and the Hawkeyes will be gunning for the Big 10 title.

Wisconsin also begins the season as a Big 10 betting favorite at +350 with quarterback Scott Tolzien entering his third season.  Last season, he threw for 16 touchdowns and just over 2,700 yards. The Badgers won the Champs Sports Bowl by defeating Miami 20-14 to end the 2009 season, with Tolzien completing 19 of 26 passes for 260 yards.  The offensive spark for the Badgers looks to be strong this season, as the team has improved and matured and will be ready for Big 10 action.

Penn State is the only other Big 10 team in addition to Ohio State to win the conference in the past five years. The Nittany Lions begin 2010 with long-time coach Joe Paterno and hope for a strong start to the season for running back Evan Royster.  He started last season sluggishly, but then ran for over 100 yards in three consecutive games versus Minnesota, Michigan, and Northwestern, averaging six yards per carry.  Quarterback Daryll Clark completed 24 touchdowns and threw for 3,000 yards last season. As this may be the last season for College Hall of Fame coach Paterno, who has led the Nittany Lions since 1966, Penn State will be playing with passion.

Although Ohio State may have the strongest roster entering the season, the Big 10 is a great conference for college football betting fans to take a chance on, as three other conference teams have the ability, stats, and motivation necessary to take the conference championship.
