Bet on NBA – Phoenix at Denver, New York, L.A. Lakers in Action

January 11, 2011

The Phoenix Suns take on the Denver Nuggets as road dogs in the NBA online sportsbook while the New York Knicks travel to Portland to battle the Trailblazers.

The late game sees the Los Angeles Lakers hosting the horrible Cleveland Cavaliers as a 15-point home favorite. Can Kobe and Co. really cover such a gargantuan spread? Read on to see what I think!

Phoenix Suns (15-20) at Denver Nuggets (20-16)

Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado

When: 9:00 pm EST

NBA Betting Odds: Phoenix +5

Analysis: Trade rumors are swirling around Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and a couple of other Denver Nuggets. It’s obviously affected the Nuggets as Denver has gone 0 and 3 straight up and versus the basketball betting spread in their last 3 games. Denver has been playing with zero heart lately.

2 of the 3 losses occurred to the L.A. Clippers and the Sacramento Kings. I got burned in the Sacramento game when I falsely believed that Denver would hit the hardwood with guns blazing after the Clippers worked them over in a 93 to 106 loss a day before. SAC destroyed Denver 122 to 102.

My gut tells me that Phoenix covers the spread in this game and I can’t bet over the total because Denver could decide to just lay down in this contest like they have in their last 3 and simply not score enough points.

New York Knicks (21-15) at Portland Trailblazers (20-18)

Where: Rose Garden, Portland, Oregon

When: 10:00 pm EST

NBA Betting Odds: Portland -4

Analysis: The ‘Blazers are a very good 10 and 6 versus the NBA betting odds in the sports book this season and have gone 4 and 2 versus the spread in their last 6 games. They should be 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 because the Miami Heat needed overtime in order to cover a 5 point spread against Portland in the ‘Blazers last, a 100 to 107 loss to the Heat.

The Knicks are a good team but this will be their third straight road game and Portland’s commitment to defense really got to the Knicks the last time these two teams met. The ‘Blazers won that game 100 to 95. I see Portland’s frontline of Nicolas Batum, LaMarcus Aldrdige and Marcus Camby forcing the Knicks and Amare Stoudemire into more of a half court game than what they would prefer.

Cleveland Cavaliers (8-29) at Los Angeles Lakers (27-11)

Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California

When: 10:30 pm EST

NBA Betting Odds: Cleveland +15

Analysis: How bad are the Cleveland Cavaliers? They’ve gone 5-8-1 ATS in their last 14 games in the sports betting book. They’ve gone 2 and 20 straight up in their last 22 games. The Cavs are garbage but the Lakers aren’t exactly a spread covering machine.

L.A. is 7 and 12 against the spread at home and they are giving up 15 points in this game. The Lakers are also 2 and 6 ATS in their last 8 home games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.

L.A. should beat Cleveland by 30 points but the likelier scenario is that the Lakers allow the Cavs to stick around until the final 4 minutes in the 4th quarter where Kobe takes over and L.A. wins by 8 to 10 points.
