Jan. 5th – NBA Games
Atlanta Hawks (23-14) at Utah Jazz (24-11)
Where: EnergySolutions Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah
When: 9:00 pm EST
NBA Odds: Atlanta +6
Analysis: The Hawks will be playing in their 4th straight road game and usually I wouldn’t even consider backing a pro hoops team in the sports betting book doing that, but the Hawks haven’t really broken too much of a sweat on this road trip. After failing to Oklahoma City 94 to 103 as 5-point dogs, Atlanta took down the Clippers and Kings, 107 to 98 and 108 to 102, in their last 2 games. The Hawks covered in both of those contests and should be ready to go against one of the best teams in the West in the Utah Jazz. Utah is 9 and 10 ATS at home and has gone 1 and 6 against the spread in their last 7 games. I believe that the Hawks can keep this contest close.
Denver Nuggets (20-13) at Los Angeles Clippers (10-24)
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
When: 10:30 pm EST
NBA Odds: Denver -3
Analysis: The Nuggets have been pretty good versus the NBA odds in the sportsbook lately going 3-0-1 in their last 4 games. The best news for Denver, though, is that Carmelo Anthony was back to his usual self in their last game, a 113 to 106 victory and push ATS versus the Houston Rockets. ‘Melo conjured up 33 points and 11 boards in that contest. The Clippers have gone back to their CBA playing ways, dropping 2 games in a row straight up and going 1-3-1 against the spread in their last 5 games. 3 points just isn’t a lot to give up in this game. I have to back the Nuggets, don’t I?
Los Angeles Lakers (24-11) at Phoenix Suns (14-18)
Where: US Airways Center, Phoenix, Arizona
When: 10:30 pm EST
NBA Odds: Lakers -4
Analysis: 70% of basketball betting handicappers are all over the Lakers in this contest, but I’ve seen this before from L.A. They put a serious beat down on a team, they go into the Phoenix game after trouncing Detroit 108 to 83 as -11 ½ point favorites, only to play like the Clippers in their next game. L.A. is 2 and 5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. Phoenix isn’t a very good team having lost 7 out of their last 10 straight up, though, and are the worst rebounding team in the NBA. I have to go with the Lakers to pound the Suns on Wednesday night. L.A.’s frontcourt of Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum is just too big for Phoenix to handle.
