Bet on Horse Racing – Saratoga Betting Odds
August 6, 2010
It is not often we get to wager on races longer than 1 ¼ miles, but we will get our money’s worth on Friday afternoon as a full field of 12 will head to the gate in the $70,000 John’s Call, which will be contested at 1 5/8 miles on the turf course at Saratoga.
Last year’s winner Solitaire is back from Canada to attempt to win this race for the second year in a row.
The James Bond trainee won this race last year after prepping in a race at Woodbine, and is coming off a decent effort at the Canadian track last out in the Singspiel (G3), which was a 1 ½ mile race.

It appears as if the gelding is primed for a top effort and gets the services of Julien Leparoux, who was aboard him for last year’s win.
He is my top pick in the race, which is the middle leg of our Late Pick 3 ticket.
Before we get to the Late Pick 3, we have a $25,000 claiming race to wager on, and Quick Charm looks well spotted to win his fourth race in a row for trainer Mike Maker.
Today’s Play of the Day from Saratoga:
SAR Race 4 Clm $25,000B (2:40 ET)
- #2 Quick Charm 3/1
- #5 Big Stick 7/2
- #9 Keeping the Honor 9/2
- #10 Pictural 6/1
Analysis: #2 Quick Charm beat $20K for non-winners of a race since Jan. 1 last out in his first go off a eight-month layoff.
The five year old has now won six of 13 career starts on turf and won over the turf here back in ’08 and ran second in a $20K claimer here last summer.
Maker finds a good spot for him here facing non-winners of two races since Feb. 5.
He likely goes off at a light price here but looks like he will be tough to beat in this spot.
#5 Big Stick went gate to wire to beat $16K non-winners of a race on turf in five months.
The gelding looks to be primed for a good effort here in his third start of his current form cycle.
Horse Wagering Odds

SAR Race 7 OClm $35,000N1X (1:00 ET)
#3 Ordination, #1 Cheyenne Nation, #4 Premium Gold
#3 Ordination drops out of a $50K claimer at Del Park where the gelding made a good middle move to take over the lead and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth as the 6/5 chalk in his first go off a 3 1/2 month break.
The third and fifth place finisher in that race came back to win next out. Clement is off to a tardy start at the meet (0 for 11) but has this guy well spotted here.
#1 Cheyenne Nation was a good looking maiden winner last out in his firth career start, coming with a wide run and drawing clear late.
The barn has been on fire at the meet, hitting with nine of his first 18 starters. This colt still appears to have some upside and is a half to stakes winner Sporting Art ($394K).
SAR Race 8 The John’s Call (4:56 ET)
#3 Solitaire, #6 Lignon’s Hero
#3 Solitaire is looking for a repeat in the John’s Call, coming into last year’s race off a win at Woodbine versus Alw-1 company and winning the race at 5/1.
This year the gelding comes in off a runner up finish in Canada in the Singspiel (G3) where he had the lead in the stretch but was no match for Spice Route, a winner of over $800K on turf in his career including three wins in graded stakes company.
Our top pick was well clear of the rest of the field in the race and was making his first start off a seven-month layoff. Leparoux was aboard last year for the win and is back on board today. He looks headed for a repeat.
#6 Lignon’s Hero beat Alw-2 optional claimers last out in his U.S. debut, which came off a four-month layoff. The five year old looked impressive, drawing clear to win by three lengths.
The third place finisher in the race was Memorial Maniac, who came back to beat Alw-3 optional claimers at Arlington Park on July 23.
This guy is a tricky read off the one start, but did win a Group 3 in his native Brazil and figures to move forward off his last start and looks capable of handling the extra ground.
SAR Race 9 Md Sp Wt (5:30 ET)
#5 Irish Lady, #7 Makeminechocolate, #9 Lateday Edition, #11 Ready for Autumn
#5 Irish Lady makes her first start since May and her first go on turf here for the Bond barn. This filly should take to turf, she has three sibs that are winner sand two of them have won on the lawn including Revival Ridge ($136K).
The barn is 31% winners (with a +ROI) with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff.
#7 Makeminechocolate stumbled coming out of the gate and mounted a good late run to finish in the runner up spot last out, beaten a half length for the top spot.
This guy is headed in the right direction and makes his third start off the bench for the Tagg barn.

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers.
One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
