Bet On Golf – In Dubai, Don’t Throw Bjorn To The Side
February 10, 2011
When you bet on golf this week in Dubai, you may be taking a long look at icons like Tiger Woods, established performers like world #1 Lee Westwood or Sergio Garcia, or up-and-comers like Martin Kaymer or Rory McIlroy, but one name that can’t be thrown to the side is Thomas Bjorn, who has won the Dubai Desert Classic before and has hardly lost his stroke.
On Thursday, Bjorn tees it up at the Emirates Golf Club, alongside the top three players in the world and a lot of other stars.

The player who has perhaps put forth the most brilliant performance in the history of the Dubai event is Thomas Bjorn, who is 2001 out-dueled Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods to win with four rounds totaling 266, which is the tournament record. His timing is pretty good for as successful return, as he won the Qatar Masters, another part of the "Gulf Swing," last week. The former two-time British Open runner-up did not have a great year in 2010, missing 13 cuts. But maybe he is dangerous as a +4000 shot as we bet on golf this week.
Bjorn is #60 in the Official World Golf Rankings, but since it’s rather early in the year, his victory lifted him from 145th in the Race to Dubai to the #3 spot. The Race to Dubai is the rough equivalent of the FedEx Cup Playoffs in the U.S. and leads to the Dubai World Championship at the end of the year.
You want to talk about ups and downs – Bjorn had to endure a personal crisis that marred his participation in last year’s Ryder Cup, where he was Europe’s vice-captain, when a Danish stewardess told the press that the married Bjorn was the father of her baby. That brought some blowback for the Dane, who had been very critical of Ian Woosnam in 2006, blasting his lack of leadership for leaving him off the Ryder Cup team.
That’s not all. Those who bet on golf remember oh so well when Bjorn had a major title within his grasp at Royal St. George’s and blew a three-shot lead in the closing stages of the British Open, watching as Ben Curtis (125/1 this week) took home the Claret Jug. I suppose you could say that in many ways he hasn’t been the same since, and had won just three tournaments in more than eight years until the triumph at Qatar, where he birdied three of the last four holes to hold off a hard-charging Alviro Quiros, who checks in at +2000 in the odds to bet on golf this week.
Keep an eye on this guy. He’s feeling that "comeback fever."
