Bet on Football Odds – Carolina Panthers vs New York Giants
September 10, 2010
The NFL Betting Spread is set and the new 82,566-seat Meadowlands Stadium is ready, all that’s left to do now is kick that pig skin off.
The New York football Giants will host the first regular season game at their new digs this Sunday afternoon when they play host to the Carolina Panthers.
Ironically, it was the Panthers who were the last team to play a regular season game in the old stadium, a game they dominated to the tune of 41-9. But it’s a new season, and a new era in New York football, so let’s get down to the NFL prediction.

Carolina Panther vs. New York Giants (Meadowlands Stadium – East Rutherford, NJ)
Sunday September 12th at 1 PM ET – TV: FOX
Bet on Football Odds:
Carolina – PS +6 (-110) ML +230
New York – PS -6 (-110) ML -270
Total – 40
That season finale was a real testament to how both clubs were going last season. After another terrible start, and an injury to Jake Delhomme, an unproven Matt Moore took over and turned this team around. Carolina went on to win big in four of their final five games with Moore at the helm, and as has happened so many times in the past, the veteran would never get his job back.
The Giants were a different story last season. After starting out the season 5-0, the Giants defence collapsed. They went on to lose eight of their last 11 contests, all of which were loses against the spread, but it was the margins of defeat that prompted some big offseason moves by the Giants brain trust.
The Panthers game may have just been the final straw, but the Giants knew things had to change even before that game as they gave up 40 or more points in five of the team’s eight losses.
So out was first year coordinator Bill Sheridan, and in was ex-Bills coordinator and interim head coach Perry Fewell. They also went out and landed some key pieces in free agency, the biggest being the addition of former Arizona Cardinal, Antrel Rolle, who will really solidify the secondary.
They also went out and got veteran linebacker Keith Bulluck, and added a good young player to their defensive line in first-round draft choice, Jason Pierre-Paul. And in the preseason at least, it appears that those moves will be monumental in turning this team back into a beast both straight up and against the NFL spread.
On offense, the starting running attack got a shakeup as Ahmad Bradshaw is the new starter, with Brandon Jacobs getting the demotion. The Giants like to pound the ball, and hope that the shakeup will equate to an improvement in their running game, which finished 17th in the league last year in yards per game.
Eli Manning is coming off an impressive season that saw him throw for 4021 yards with 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He’ll be looking for Steve Smith the majority of the time as he is fresh off a 107 catch year that included seven touchdowns.
For Carolina, the running back duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart will again be the focal point of this offense. Last season, they became the first teammates to rush for over 1,100 yards in a season. In that finale last year, Stewart set a Panthers’ single-game record by racking up 206 yards, but he’s been nursing an injury this preseason and will likely see limited action.
There’s no doubt that this contest is going to be far from their last regular season meeting, and I think the Giants open up their new stadium in far finer fashion than they closed their own home. The NFL predictions have been coming in on the Giants, and that’s where I’m putting my money as well.
NFL Spread Pick: New York Giants (+6) -110
