Bet On Football – Western Michigan vs Ball State

October 9, 2010

Those people who bet on football know that while the Broncos of Western Michigan have had a rough time of it in the early going, the Ball State Cardinals are looking ahead to better things after an upset win in last week’s conference play.

Ball State plays host to WMU in Saturday’s Mid-America Conference action that is slated to get underway at Noon ET at Scheumann Stadium (artificial turf) in Muncie, IN.

Ball State, which has had the upper hand in this series in recent seasons, is listed as the four-point favorite, with the total of 50 points, as we bet on football for this weekend.

Bet On Football Lines:

Western Michigan +4

Total 50

Here are some of the NCAAF trends as they impact the college lines on this game:

  • Western Michigan has lost four of its last five games SU
  • Western Michigan has covered two of its last 11 road games
  • Western Michigan has lost nine of its last 11 road games SU
  • Western Michigan has played six of its last nine road games UNDER the total
  • Ball State has lost 15 of its last 19 games SU
  • Ball State has lost eight of its last nine home games SU

Key stats for Western Michigan — The Broncos don’t move the ball on the ground to much. Thus far they have averaged a shade less than 77 yards a game, which ranks them 114th in the country. They have also allowed 14 sacks, which is a big concern for us as we bet on football this weekend.

Key stats for Ball State — The Cardinals’ problem is that they are not the most proficient team through the air. Ball State ranks 116th in the country in passing offense, and one of the things that has resulted form that is an average of slightly less than 19 points a game, which is 104th in the nation.

Here are some of the head-to-head trends that may influence how we bet on football in this game:

  • Ball State has won and covered five of the last six meetings
  • Four of the last six meetings have gone OVER the total

Certainly a low point for Ball State was a 27-23 loss to Liberty, an FCS school, in the season’s second week, but the Cards ended three weeks of consecutive road games with a win over Central Michigan last Saturday.

In that game, they were getting 19 points in the college football lines, so it was quite a notable upset. As we noted above, this is not a productive passing team, but there has been a gradual transition from Kelly Page to freshman Keith Wenning, and while the results have not been sensational, they have been improved, something people who bet on football should take notice of.

Now if they could only get senior RB MiQuale Lewis (1736 yards as a sophomore) going again…..Well, enough wishful thinking.

As we prepare to bet on football, a major consideration has to revolve around the inconsistency of WMU’s quarterback, Alex Carder, who has been intercepted seven times already, and whose 14 for 33 performance against Idaho last time out (a game here WMU was outgained 477-184!) makes this situation combustible.

Without ground support, the Broncos could be playing with their backs to the wall most of the time. The smarter move here, in a small recommendation, is to lay the points with favored Ball State as we bet on football this Saturday.

JAY’S PLAY: BALL STATE -4 *
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
