Bet on Football – Kansas State Goes After Fourth in a Row

September 25, 2010

Those who bet on football recognize that Kansas State has become more competitive again in Bill Snyder’s second tenure as coach, and on Saturday, the Wildcats will try to win their fourth game in a row as they square off against the Knights of Central Florida in inter-conference action that is slated to kick off at 12:30 PM ET at Snyder Family Stadium (artificial turf) in the "Little Apple," Manhattan, Kansas. In the college football odds, Kansas State lays seven points to UCF, with the total posted at 45.5 points. As we bet on football this weekend, we’ve got those numbers in mind.

It’s been a process, but Bill Snyder, who’s now had 145 wins at KSU, has brought this team back to respectability, and it would seem the Wildcats are poised to make their first bowl appearance since the 2006 Texas Bowl. Snyder, who spent 17 seasons in Little Manhattan, came back to the program, where they named the stadium after him, last year and steered his team to a 6-6 straight-up mark (6-4 ATS for those who bet on football). This season he has an experienced quarterback in Carson Coffman, who is efficient though perhaps not prolific (only 54 attempts so far).

Of course, Coffman doesn’t have to throw the ball all that much when he’s got a running back like Daniel Thomas, who has burned everyone so far – 234 yards against UCLA, 137 against Missouri State and 181 last week against Iowa State – in a manner that makes everyone who bets on football stand up and take notice. Thomas is currently second in the nation in rushing. K-State has faced some fractured offenses thus far, and that is probably one of the reasons it has limited opposing passers to 45% completions.

Here are some of the trends as they impact the college football odds as we bet on football this weekend:

  • UCF has won five of its last seven games SU
  • UCF has played four of its last six games OVER the total
  • UCF has covered its last eight road games
  • Kansas State has won four of its last six games SU
  • Kansas State has covered seven of its last eight games
  • Kansas State has won nine of its last ten home games SU

George O’Leary has his UCF Knights ready for another bowl run – or so he may think. He hasn’t had any luck putting together back-to-back winning seasons at the school, which is why the game at K-State is very pivotal. Those who bet on football know that Central Florida has something that is very important when playing on the road, and that is a capable defense. So far the Knights have permitted only 3.4 yards a carry and 43% completions, but the stiffest test of their season is going to be in dealing with Thomas out of the KSU backfield.

What could wind up being a key factor here is the problem thrown at Kansas State by the mobility of UCF’s quarterback. Jeffery Godfrey, a freshman, has shown nerves of steel while under fire in his limited action; he led a decent comeback effort against North Carolina State and then conquered Buffalo in his first start, which happened to be on the road. Godfrey is a scrambler, and he makes things happen. Sometimes he can create something out of nothing, so he brings something that may not be seen on the stat sheet, and that’s what people who bet on football need to take note of. then, for a change of pace, UCF has another quarterback option in Rob Calabrese. O’Leary’s team is mentally tough, covering eight consecutive trips on the road, and they may have the ability to neutralize Thomas, at least to an extent. That swings the pendulum in their favor, and we will recommend a bet on football with the Knights, getting seven points in the college football odds.
