Bet On College Football – Virginia Tech Looks for Fifth Straight Win

October 16, 2010

As we bet on college football betting this weekend, we know that after a disastrous start that included a defeat to a lower-division team, the Hokies of Virginia Tech are now looking to win their fifth straight game.

On Saturday they will play host to the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest in an ACC game that is slated to kick off at 3:30 PM ET at lane Stadium (natural turf) in Blacksburg, VA. In the NCAA betting lines, Virginia Tech is favored by 22.5 points, and we will use that number as we recommend a bet on college football on Saturday.

Wake Forest +22.5

Key stats for Wake Forest — The Deacons are 102nd nationally in total defense, giving up 429 yards a game. Wake Forest has allowed 17 touchdown passes, which ties Tulsa for the most in the nation. They actually run the ball pretty well, ranking 28th in the country at an average of 199 yards, but they don’t defend it all that well, allowing about five yards a carry. They’ve played against some good offenses, including Stanford, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Navy. Freshman quarterback Tanner Price is 86th in passing efficiency, with five TD passes and three interceptions. he heaved it up a lot last week against Navy, going 37 of 53 for 326 yards and a pair of scores.

Key stats for Virginia Tech — Even though they’ve been without the services of Ryan Williams for the past three games, the Hokies are ranked 24th in the country in rushing. Three different ball-carriers – RB’s Darren Evans and David Wilson and QB Tyrod Taylor – have gained at least 300 yards on the ground. They’ve outscored the last four opponents by an average of 19 points per game. So how are they doing on their famous special teams? Virginia Tech is 56th in net punting, 20th in punt returns, and 49th in kickoff returns.

Here are some of the trends as they may impact how we bet on college football here:

  • Wake Forest has lost four of its last five games SU
  • Wake Forest is 2-7-1 ATS in its last ten road games
  • Wake Forest has lost nine of its last ten road games SU
  • Wake Forest has played eight of its last 11 road games UNDER
  • Virginia Tech has won nine of its last eleven games SU
  • Virginia Tech has won 15 of its last 18 home games SU

What’s kind of interesting about this one is that Wake Forest, which has had all kinds of problems on defense, has hung in very gamely in its last two games, losing by a total of five points to Georgia Tech and Navy after allowing 99 point sin back-to-back games against Stanford and Florida State, not to mention the game before all that, where Duke hung 54 points on them.

To bet on college football is to recognize a team that is scrappy, and Wake fits that description. By the same token, Virginia Tech right now fits the description of a team that is looking to chalk up some "style points." The Hokies are not that far from climbing back into the national rankings, which would be a tremendous feat after suffering a loss to James Madison. To get there, though, they have to be impressive. That means running it up if they can. These last four wins have all been by double digits, and Tech has shown some nastiness on both sides of the ball. Wake Forest’s musical chairs at the quarterback position (granted, by necessity because of injuries) might play right into their program here. So might Jim Grobe’s sieve-like defensive front. Remember that even with the aforementioned Ryan Williams, the Hokies have run for 317 and 230 yards the last two games, so they are opening up holes. We’ll bet on college football with Virginia Tech, the 22.5-point favorite in the NCAA betting lines.
