September 25, 2010

In the mood to bet on college football this weekend? Well the game for you comes Saturday, when the Northwestern Wildcats host the Central Michigan Chippewas. Who’s your pick?

Central Michigan Chippewas (2-1 SU, 3-0 ATS) at Northwestern Wildcats (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS)

Saturday, September 25: 12:00 p.m. Big 10 Network

NCAA Betting Odds:

Central Michigan: +7
Northwestern: -7

Although Ohio State and Iowa get all the publicity in the Big 10, Northwestern has quietly put together a 3-0 start of its own. And as usual it’s because of a strong passing game.

That has become the staple of Pat Fitzgerald’s time at Northwestern, as last year Mike Kafka led the show, and now it’s Dan Persa’s turn. The senior Persa has bided his time, and waited for his opportunity, and it’s paying off big-time, as he’s now the man calling the shots. On the season, he’s completing a staggering 81 percent of his passes, and has thrown six touchdowns and zero interceptions. With numbers like that, it’s not hard to see why Northwestern is 3-0!

But Central Michigan comes into this game with a pedigree of their own, after taking home a MAC title last season, and starting 2-1 in 2010. Like Northwestern, they’re breaking in a new quarterback, Ryan Radcliffe. Radcliffe has taken over for four year starter and record setter Dan Lefevour, and has done so in spectacular fashion throwing for 795 yards and three touchdowns this season.

However, Radcliffe hasn’t had to do it alone with the emergence of a strong running game, behind Paris Cotton. If you’re looking to take Central Michigan when you bet on college football this weekend, it should be because of Cotton. The junior from Miami had a career day last weekend against Eastern Michigan, carrying the ball 21 times for 209 yards and three touchdowns. If Central Michigan is to win over the weekend, they’ll need a similar performance from Cotton.

So who should be your pick when you bet on college football this weekend? Take Central Michigan and the points.

While Central Michigan probably won’t win this game straight up, they’ve got the pedigree to at the very least keep this one close. They’re 2-1, with the one loss a heartbreaker at Temple, and they really believe that they’ve got what it takes to upset Northwestern at Ryan Field.

At the end of the day, their balanced attack should do just enough to keep the Northwestern defense off-balance, and put up plenty of points to keep this one close.
Take Persa and the Wildcats to win, but the more balanced Chippewas offense to cover the point spread.

When betting on college football this weekend, there’s only one pick to make, take Central Michigan getting a touchdown against Northwestern.

The Pick: Central Michigan +7
