That’s right, as we close in on the home stretch of the season, both these teams are trailing Oregon in the standings, and can’t afford another loss. So who’ll have the edge Saturday?
Many who Bet on College Football believe that it’s Stanford, thanks to one of the most explosive offenses in the game. They rank No. 5 in the country in scoring, averaging 42 points on just about 467 yards of offense per game.
The star of this show is maybe the top quarterback in college football, Andrew Luck. The sophomore has been as good as advertised this year, and very well could be the No. 1 overall pick in the next NFL Draft.
So far in 2010, he’s lit up defenses nationwide, throwing for 1,920 yards and 20 touchdowns, while only being intercepted six times.
However, while Luck gets all the headlines, Stanford once again has another top-flight running game. On the season, they rank 12th nationally with 223 yards per game, all despite losing the top back in college football last year, Toby Gerhart.
Gerhart has been replaced admirably by Stepfan Taylor, and he has picked up right where his predecessor left off last year, rushing for 728 yards so far this season. Taylor enters this one having rushed for 100 or more yards in five straight games.
But, we must not forget about their opponents on Saturday, the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona will likely be the best team that Stanford plays from here until bowl season, and it’s because of their defense.
When you Bet on Football this weekend, understand that no one in the Pac-10 is as good as the Wildcats on the defensive side of the ball. They rank No. 7 nationally in fewest points allowed, giving up just 14.4 points per game.
And it’s their run defense that separates them from the rest, as Arizona is allowing just 88 yards on the ground per game.
But can their offense do enough to keep up with Stanford Saturday? We’re not sure.
Look, no matter how good your defense is, you’re going to give up some points to Stanford. And while Arizona’s offense is good, we’re not sure exactly what we’ll get from them Saturday.
That’s because as of press time, it’s uncertain who’ll play quarterback. Former starter Nick Foles has been on the bench for the last few weeks with injury, and while Matt Scott has replaced him admirably, it will be Foles who will get the call as soon as he’s ready.
If it’s this Saturday, what should we expect from Foles, a guy who hasn’t played since October 16? We’re not sure, and because of it, stay away from Arizona.
Expect the Arizona defense to keep this one close early, but for Stanford and their offense to blow it open late. This Stanford Cardinal team is for real, and they’re once again going to prove it Saturday.
When you Bet on College Football this weekend, take the Cardinal. You won’t be disappointed.
