Bet On College Football – Trojans Have Not Yet Covered

September 25, 2010

If you like to bet on college football, you might like what you’ve seen out of the USC Trojans this season, because the Men of Troy have afforded a betting opportunity in that they haven’t covered a game yet for new coach Lane Kiffin. On Saturday they’ll try to be a little more impressive as they venture north to face the Washington Cougars in pac-10 action that will kick off at 3 PM ET at martin Stadium (artificial turf) in Pullman, WA. In the lines that have been established as we bet on college football, the Trojans are laying 22 points, with the over-under on the game posted at 55.5 points.

USC is one program where a lot has been happening, and that sort of goes without saying. The Trojans were decimated by the after-effects of Reggie Bush’s behavior when he was at the university, and if you bet on college football, or simply follow it, you know we’re not talking about sleeping with one of the Kardashian sisters either. Pete Carroll left his coaching post, and Mike Garrett maybe should have given back HIS Heisman too, if he had known about Bush’s NCAA violations while they were happening. Then the school stole Lane Kiffin away from his one-year tenure at Tennessee, where he had started to bring the Vols back to respectability.

Thus far things have gone smoothly or rough, depending on the way you want to look at it. if you are a "square," so to speak, you might think that they are doing quite fine, because they are undefeated and ranked 20th in the poll they can be in, which is the Associated Press poll. However, if you bet on college football, you know a little differently. USC has won all three games, for sure, but the Trojans have struggled against Hawaii, Virginia and Minnesota, beating three teams who were middle-of-the-road at best, with a winning margin of 27 points while being favored by a total of 53.

Here are some of the trends as they impact our football betting prediction on this game:

• USC has covered two of its last eleven games
• USC has won 21 of its last 25 games SU
• USC has played five of its last six games UNDER the total
• USC is 0-5 ATS in its last five road games
• USC has won five of its last six road games SU
• USC has played six of its last nine road games UNDRE the total
• Washington State has lost eleven of its last 12 games SU
• Washington State has lost 11 of its last 15 home games SU

Here are the head-to-head betting trends that may influence how you bet on college football:

• USC has covered five of the last seven meetings
• USC has won the last seven meetings SU
• USC has won six of the last seven meetings SU as the road team

So here we are again, with USC favored by a lot of points. What makes this game any different for those who bet on college football? Well, maybe it’s because Wazzou had to really struggle to beat an FCS team in Montana State, gave up well over 500 yards and 65 points to Oklahoma State, rank 107th in total defense, 105th in rushing and 106th in sacks allowed. However, there’s another side to that coin. Washington State went into its game with SMU as a huge underdog, and have to be credited for fighting tooth and nail, at least in the first half, to keep things relatively respectable before June Jones’ run and shoot offense pulled away a bit. The final of 35-21 represented a pointspread cover.

So we are perhaps looking to see if WSU has what it takes to get a "backdoor" cover in this one, because USC, through its under-achievement, would seem to open itself up to it. In a situation like this, a quarterback is going to be a key figure for those who bet on college football. Well, Jeff Tuel, who got a baptism under fire last year as he burned his redshirt by necessity, is going to throw and throw. He has heaved it up 91 times so far, and if he can complete some of those, he may get some garbage points for team that (we hope) will try to keep from being humiliated at home. The USC situation right now leaves us wondering what kind of team this really is. Our football betting prediction is influenced by that. So as you bet on college football this weekend, keep in mind that we make a small recommendation on Washington State plus big points.

JAY’S PLAY: WASHINGTON STATE +22 *
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
