Bet on College Football – Things Look Wide Open in Oklahoma

September 18, 2010

Those who bet on college football often like to watch a game where things look very wide-open, and that may be the case on Saturday when the Oklahoma State Cowboys play host to the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa in an inter-conference matchup that is slated to get underway at 7 PM ET at Boone Pickens Stadium (artificial turf) in Stillwater, OK. In the latest football game odds, the Cowboys are a 6.5-point favorite, with a posted total of 69 points. We go with those numbers while we bet on college football for Saturday.

Bet On College Football Odds:

Oklahoma State -6.5

Tulsa +6.5

Total 69

Tulsa’s offense looks to be in high-gear coming out of the box. The Golden Hurricane has rolled up 1125 yards in its first two games, and those have included a gut-wrenching 51-49 loss to East Carolina, where they gave up 27 points in the final quarter, and a 33-20 win over Bowling Green as a 16.5-point favorite where players who bet on college football and sided with Tulsa were losers. Thus far the opposition has had to gain only 11.8 yards for every point scored.

You can’t complain too much about the job quarterback GJ Kinne has done so far. The junior, who tossed 22 TD passes last season, has already thrown seven, with 61% completions, and he’s going to need to produce here, because Tulsa has not emphasized the running game. Leading rusher Trey Watts is averaging just three yards a carry. So as we bet on college football, we know that we’re going to see the ball in the air.

Here are some of the trends as they impact our NCAA expert pick as we bet on college football:

  • Tulsa is 0-5 ATS in its last five games
  • Tulsa has lost seven of its last nine games SU
  • Tulsa has played five of its last six games OVER the total
  • Tulsa is 0-4-1 ATS in its last five road games
  • Tulsa has lost four of its last five road games SU
  • Tulsa has played five of its last seven road games UNDER the total
  • Oklahoma State has covered one of its last five games
  • Oklahoma State has won ten of its last 13 games SU
  • Oklahoma State has covered two of its last six home games
  • Oklahoma State has won four of its last five home games SU
  • Oklahoma State has played four of its last six home games OVER the total
  • Tulsa has covered four of the last six meetings
  • Oklahoma State has won four of the last five meetings SU

Oklahoma State has a couple of veteran weapons who are scary, to say the least. Kendall Hunter is one of the guys who needs to be listed in the Heisman Trophy proposition, but isn’t. Hunter ran for 1555 yards as a sophomore and made first-team All-America. He suffered an injury as a junior and was limited to 382 yards. Now he’s back, healthy, and running over opposition stop units. In the first two games, he has 414 yards (8.4 yards a carry). With Justin Blackmon (18 catches, 257 yards) in the lineup as well, there’s a lot of balance for quarterback Brandon Weeden to work with.

Weeden is 74% accurate in the two games against Troy and Washington State, but his problem right now, and a problem for those who bet on college football, is that he has a sprained right thumb that is in a splint. He has still performed with it, but it could be a concern because OSU doesn’t have any experience behind him. Even so, this Cowboy team has the superior ability to control the game on the ground, against a Tulsa squad that is porous against Conference USA competition and has covered just two of its last eleven games. As we bet on college football this Saturday, our NCAA expert pick is to lay the points with OSU.

JAY’S PLAY: OKLAHOMA STATE -6.5 ***
